Cutler Bay is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. Cutler Bay is located on the bayou of the same name. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The economy of Cutler Bay revolves around agriculture and fishing. In 2007, Cutler Bay became home to the first ever open water flyfishing tournament in South Florida when it hosted the "USA Fly Fishing Open" from May 15-19th at Fort Lauderdale's Jetty Landing Resort. Cutler Bay has a rich history dating back to 1854 when Spanish missionaries began settling here with some families coming from Cuba and other parts of Latin America; they brought with them their European skills and architecture which quickly influenced local residents. The post office was established in 1857 and named for General James Ketchum who had helped lead American forces during the Seminole Wars (1835-48). The town grew rapidly due to its location on navigable waterways - including both bayous - making it an ideal spot for cotton plantations, sugarcane farming, shipping, cattle ranching and manufacturing throughout most of the 20th century. After World War II ended, many African Americans left Cutlers Bay for new opportunities in North Miami Beach or Doral Heights because there were no black limits placed on white residency before then – meaning black people could own property as well as vote and work within their community without fear of discrimination or social isolation. However, during this time period homeless people (many from Africa) would often encamp near busy intersections such as Northwest 1st Street and NE 2nd Avenue until law enforcement removed them using tear gas or pepper spray after trying tosocket tents illegally overnight or engaging in any form of public disturbance not authorized by police commanders.
