Dania Beach is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in Dania Beach were James and Sarah Crouse on December 3, 1839. They built a log cabin on what is now known as "Crouse's Bluff" about one mile (1 km) south of where Dania Beach now stands. The first post office was established in 1841 and named after Captain Nathaniel Bache who had died in 1836 while exploring between St Augustine and Jacksonville Bay. In 1853, Jno. Pritchard opened a store at the corner of Southwest First Avenue and Northeast Second Street which became the nucleus of today's downtown business district; it still operates today as Pritchard's Place grocerystore/cafeteria complex with its original brick building still standing within its walls. In 1861, Major General John Fetterman founded Fort Brooke on Mobile Bay near present day Dania Beach to protect shipping interests in that region during the American Civil War. Fort Brooke operated until 1901 when it was surrendered by Confederate forces to Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant following their successful Siege of Mobile two months earlier. A year later than planned due to poor weather, Gadsden Purchase land comprising almost all of modern-day Dania Beach was acquired from Chief Muscogee Nation leader Etowah Coosa for $2 million cash plus future royalties When World War II began Dania Beach sheltered some 10,000 military personnel and their families along with untold numbers more transient citizens who flocked thereto for Olivette Army Air Field Goodyear Airport which served asNAS Cocoa Municipal Airport from 1941-1945; then NAS Plantation Key before being redesignated Palm Harbor Naval Air Station effective October 15th 1947 making it Flag Line Navy Base also known as Offshore Patrol Squadron Three hundred fifty (OPA3255) flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft carrier converted USS Coral Sea(CVN 65) into an Aircraft Carrier Command Station providing air defense against various threats offshore including Pirates operating out of Guantanamo Bay Cuba during that time period until its closure effective January 6th 1988 following Gulf Stream Typhoon Hurricane Alma resulting in extensive damage & loss @ NAS Key Island
