Dania Beach is a town in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,912 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name means "daughter of Dana" in Ancient Greek. The land that now makes up Dania Beach was first settled by Indians in the late 17th century. In 1821, Captain John Stroud purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) for $5 from the Seminole Indian tribe and formed a government there under the leadership of Colonel James Moorehead. Two years later, he sold another 600 acres (240 ha) to Jno Prentice for $10 an acre. In 1824, Captains John Rodgers and Philip Horry chartered a vessel called Lady Franklin and named it after Mrs. Franklin's daughter Dania Beach on Pensacola Bayou near present-day Marathon Avenue in Dania Beach Township. By 1830, 300 residents lived hereabouts; 100 were farmers with other pursuits; 200 were fishermen; 10 were slaves; 5 worked as blacksmiths or carpenters; 2 served as postmasters; 1 bought land adjoining Clearwater River where modern day Fort Lauderdale now stands to build a permanent home for his family
The first permanent Indian settlement in what is now Dania Beach was made by the Seminole Indians in 1817. The area that is now Dania Beach was originally called Fort Mose, and it served as a trading post between Spanish settlers and the Seminoles. In 1824, Major General Andrew Jackson signed an agreement with the Seminoles which allowed them to remain in Florida but forbid them from moving into Alabama or Mississippi. The area that is now Dania Beach became part of Florida in 1905 when Dania County was created.
