In Dania Beach, Florida the navy has a long and proud history. The first navy ship to come to this town was the USS Constitution in 1845. This ship was built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte & Company of France and is now on display at Pier 54 in downtown Dania Beach. The USS Constitution was during the American Civil War and played an important role in that conflict. It helped lead to the end of the war and became one of America’s most famous warships. After the war, the USS Constitution continued its visits to Dania Beach, playing a role in theatrical shows and hosting receptions for local dignitaries. In 1954, a new navy ship – the USS Enterprise – arrived in town and quickly became popular among locals. The Enterprise served as the city’s primary warship from 1954 until she been retired in 1984. Today, different museums throughout Dania Beach offer exhibits about navy ships from various periods of their history. Today, it is hard to imagine life without naval vessels docking here in Dania Beach! There are many opportunities for visitors to learn more about this important part of our culture through museum visits or special events such as Fleet Week which takes place every May/June on Naval Base Pier 55 (just south of downtown). This year’s Fleet Week will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6th with lots of fun activities for all ages!

Dania Beach is located on the southern coast of Miami-Dade County and is bordered to the north by Boca Raton, to the east by Hollywood Park and to the south by Kendallville. It lies within ZIP code 33315. The name "Dania" comes from two words: Danielson (a man) and Isabella (the daughter of King Ferdinand II of Naples). In 1868, Blackbeard's Tomboy was found off Key Biscayne Boulevard in Dania Beach. The tomboy had been mutilated and her body left exposed for public view as a warning to sailors not approach too close while blackbeard roamed free near shore. This event inspired Jacksonville's decision in 1870 not to annex Dania Beach because it would have given Jacksonville control over Treasure Island which was then under Spanish rule

Dania Beach's history goes back to 1892 when it was named after Danish princess Dania and her husband, Prince Wilhelm of Denmark. Dania Beach was established on Clearwater Bayou on the edge of Everglades National Park, south of what is now downtown Jacksonville. In 1912, Jack Dempsey fought his first professional boxing match at Dania Beach Coliseum which helped name the beach after Princess Dania and her husband. The event also helped establish baseball as an important sport in Jacksonville with players from all over coming to play at Dania Beach Stadium from 1912-1974. In 1970, Mayor John Lindsay declared October 15th "National Dooley Day" in honor of General James Fenton who died during World War II while serving with the U.S., regarded as one of Jacksonville's mostinguished citizens. The City Council proclaimed October 15th "Dooley Day" in honor of General Fenton and passed resolutions recognizing patriotic activities throughout the month including historical events such as President Harry S Truman’s address to Congress honoring Dooley and Flag Day ceremonies across Jacksonville schools
