The B-47 Stratojet was able to fly at high speeds and cover a large area due to its efficient Pratt & Whitney J79 engines; while the L-13 Constellation was used as a trainers for pilots before they became operational as fighters/bombers. In 1945, after World War II ended, American forces transitioned from using Fighter Aircraft to Bomber Aircraft with the introduction of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber (the world's first true long range strategic bombing campaign). By 1948, all of America'sAAF service wings were equipped with bombers; this shift allowed for a more centralized command structure which increased airpower available for combat operations worldwide. In 1948, the United States Air Force gifted a C-47 Skytrain to the city of Davie, Florida. The C-47 was used by the USAF as a cargo plane and later became an air taxi service. It served in Southwest Asia during World War II and was donated to Davie in 1948.
Davie, Florida is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Davie is located on the east coast of Pasco County and shares borders with St Petersburg to the north and Clearwater Beach to the south. The name "Davy" stems from a Seminole Indian chief who arrived in 1795 and named one of his plantations "Davy's Harbor." In 1821, Captain John Fenton sailed into Davy's Harbor looking for an opening to Cuba which he found and named Fenton's Bay after him. When Commodore James Ketchum took over command of the US Navy in 1827, he ordered that all Spanish words be replaced by English terms at sea so as not to give away American naval secrets to Mexico. As a result of this change, Davie became known as "Cuba City" or "Spanish Fort". For many years it served as an important stopover for travelers between Tampa and Havana during their trips through Cuban waters. In 1912, local resident J P Fitzgerald started a local paper company which became known as The News-Press (now First Coast News). That same year saw the first major construction project in what would become Davy: One milelong dirt street was built called Liberty Highway (later renamed Gulf Boulevard) which connected downtown with Marine Drive on the mainland side of Pasco County. This road still exists today and forms part of FM 1411 which runs parallel to Gulf Boulevard. In 1923, developer H W King began purchasing land around present-day Davy including parts of what are now Sunrise Boulevard and Gulf Boulevardqqq.. In 1928 he laid out much of what would become Fourth Street within present day Davy limits qqq.. He also developed several large tracts along Third Street between Third Avenue/Gulf Boulevard and Fourth Avenue/Gulf Boulevardqqq.. These tracts were later sold off to various developers who continue using them today as housing developments such as Harbour Pointe Condominiums on Sunrise Boulevard just north of FM 1411 near where Gulf Boulevard meets Fourth Avenueqv . This development continued until about 1959 when most notable structures erected there ceased operations due primarily to pollution concerns brought about by nearby oil refineries. However some structures such as Harbour Pointe Towers remain well-preserved despite these problems thanks largely to their location next door to gated communities like Harbour Pointe Village (a condominium complex built by David Rockefeller). During this time period other areas within present day Davy did see some growth although little attention was given thereto beyond occasional resource booms or infrastructure projects like widening Gulf Blvd between Third Ave./Gulf Boulevard and Fourth Ave./Gulf Boulevardqv . This period also saw bumper crops but few permanent residents established themselves due mostly again worries over pollution from nearby refineries rather than any real community prospects outside of town itself
