Davie is the most populous municipality in Broward County and the second-most populous city in Miami-Dade County after Miami. Davie's metropolitan area had a population of 2,815,305 as of 2018. The first coffee house in Davie was established by James Caldwell and brother John Caldwell on Third Street just north of US 1 in 1853. The brothers ran a small grocery store which they supplemented with local coffee beans from Africa. In 1872, Jno Dillard opened his own coffee house on First Street between US 1 and State Road 7B (then called "State Road A" because it served as part of Fort Lauderdale's southern boundary). This coffee house became known as "The Dillard House". In 1886, David Levy opened Levy's Coffee Shop on Second Avenue near I-95/US 506 (now Parkland Boulevard). At that time Davie was an agricultural town with few retail outlets. However, when Levy erected a wooden sign reading "David Levy's Coffee House - Enjoy your cup of Joe" adjacent to his shop, suddenly there were several places to purchase coffee! In 1903 Josephine Lorusso opened her Bella Italian Bakery & Cafe on Fourth Avenue between US 1 and State Road 7B (now State Road 98), which became one of Davie's main commercial attractions during its early years. In 1916 Alonzo Morse reopened his now legendary Alonzo Morse Cafeteria on Fifth Avenue between US 1 and State Road 7B (Now Airport Boulevard) – this establishment would become known throughoutSouthwestFlorida for its great variety of pastries including pies and donuts! In 1936 Harry Bendix opened Bendix' Coffee Shop at 501 N Andrews Ave., which would later become Bendix Pharmacy & Supermarket chain throughout SouthwestFlorida until it closed operations in 1984 due to competitive pressures from other pharmacy chains.

In 1895, Doctor J.B. Shipman donated land at Fourth Avenue and Second Street adjoining Fort Lauderdale to provide an airport for Davie's growing community. At that time, Jacksonville was only about 12 miles away. In 1926, Davie had its own radio station which served as a link between the town and Jacksonville throughout much of southeast Florida. The station was known as WDTV (now WKMG). In 1938, WDTV merged with WWJ (now KPNX) in Jacksonville to form ABC Radio Company; this company later changed its name to CBS Radio Corporation. The population of Davie decreased dramatically during World War II due to wartime bombardments and other natural disasters; however, it continued to grow slowly until becoming one of south Florida's most populous communities post-war thanks largely to suburbanization along I-95 corridor east of downtown Miami Beach
