Davie, Florida is a coastal city located on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded in 1845 and became an important port for ships coming from the Gulf of Mexico and South America. The city also played a significant role in First Amendment rights and voting rights for residents. In 1971, Davie was renamed Fort Lauderdale after then-Governor Don Siegel. The Coast Guard first arrived in Davie in 1912 as part of the State Department's American Overseas Expeditionary Force. At that time, there were no military resources available to maintain law and order on the coast. The Coast Guard's first duty was to keep shipping lanes open while supplies were unloaded at nearby Miami Beach. In 1951, Daviebecame an official part of the United States Coast Guard District 2 which included all of Broward County north of Palm Beach County as well as Miami and Key Biscayne Islands. In 1966, District 2 became anofficial division within Coast Guard Command which remained until 1999 when it was reestablished as a headquarters division within Headquarters United States Coast Guard
