The Florida National Guard was activated on February 14, 1947 and has served the state of Florida since then. The guard is composed of men and women who are dedicated to the defense of our state. The Guard has a rich history that goes back to World War II. In 1942, the Florida governor declared martial law in order to provide security for Floridians during World War II. At that time, there were no national guards in the Sunshine State. The National Guard was reactivated on October 1, 1942 as part of the United States war effort and soon became an important resource for both military and civil operations in SouthwestFlorida. In 1949, President Truman signed into law the Military Assistance Program which provided financial assistance to national guard units in southern Florida. This program helped make theGuard an important part of our local police force and community development programs throughout SoutheastFlorida. The program also funded artwork, engineering projects, and public service projects such as road construction and new schools in Gulfport-Boca Raton- Fort Myers areas. What is the national guard? The National Guard (also known as the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard) is a term used to refer to all branches of the United States military that are not part of the Department of Defense. The Guard may be mobilized for any purpose, including war, peacetime duties, or state emergencies. The Guard has no legal status within the department and cannot be called to active duty in support of the Department of Defense in either names or numbers. However, because it provides vital resources and backup for the military, it has been increasingly viewed as a potential “last line” against potential domestic disorder. They are often paid less than enlistees in other branches of the military but receive equal training and benefits during their service time. The total number of troops who have served with distinction through both deployments Iraq/Syria totaled over 100,000 members from 2003-2013 according to US Military Times article dated 6/9/2015 entitled "National Guardsman Deployed To Support Troops In World War III". There have been numerous unit deployments throughout history but this is definitely one of most recent examples where an entire regiment was sent directly from stateside so soldiers could fight alongside their allies on an international stage!
