The Daytona Beach Coast Guard has been providing coastal security in the area since 1914. The coast guard is made up of civilians and military personnel who work together to provide law and order on the beach. In 1916, the Coast Guard was founded as a volunteer force under the War Department. The first official Duty Keepers were hired in 1918. Over the years, more and more volunteers have joined the Coast Guard to help protect our coastline. Today, the Daytona Beach Coast Guard provides a variety of services to residents and tourists in their local community. They are responsible for keeping communities safe by providing emergency services such as firefighting and law enforcement; protecting critical infrastructure such as bridges and tunnels; search & rescue operations;and preventing piracy. The Coast Guard Gift History began in 1914 with the creation of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Auxiliary was a volunteer group of civilians who could be called upon to provide goods and services to the Coast Guard. In 1916, the Coast Guard established its own gift shop which sold items such as postcards, hats and mugs. In 1938, the Coast Guard purchased its first military-style radio transmitter and turned it into a gift shop for use by members of the Auxiliary. In 1951, the Auxiliary became an official branch of the Coast Guardsmen and adopted a logo that included a stylized coast guard ship on either side of a blue banner reading "Gift Shop." In 1979, the name of the store was changed to The Bayou Store and in 1991 it became The Gulfstream Gallery.

Daytona Beach was founded on December 12, 1925 by two brothers, Harry and Joe Bonfiglio. On November 3rd of that year saw what would become one of history's most significant auto accidents when First National Bank building on Bay Road - now known as James Meehan Boulevard - caught fire due to faulty wiring in an oven used by employees cooking food for customers inside the bank; 108 people were killed and 500 injured in what is commonly considered one of America's worst industrial disasters ever resulted from simple mistakes made while attempting to streamline operations through modernization processes at this time
