Daytona Beach is a small town in Florida, located on the coast of Daytona Beach County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 362 people. The town is named after Daytona Beach, Florida which at that time was just a tiny village. The first Europeans to visit what is now Daytona Beach were French soldiers who were looking for an area to winter in during their retreat from Spain after the 1812 Battle of Bunker Hill. They found a small fishing village and founded it called Dieppe on December 3, 1814. In 1837, Fort Marion was built by Commodore John Rodgers as part of Operation Neptune's Spear during the Seminole War in order to protect Spanish territory along the Gulf Coast from Seminoles and English interests. On November 26, 1907, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Dieppe and most of Fort Marion including all of the cannons used at that time to protect it. A few months later on May 6th 1908 another hurricane caused extensive damage to both Dieppe and Fort Marion with over $1 million worth of damage done throughout the entire community In 1959, when Daytona Beach became an incorporated municipality it had only 171 residents according to its charter which stated: "The town shall be established upon plat thereof filed with said county clerk." By 1960 there were 431 residents living in Daytona Beach proper while also existing within unincorporated areas such as North Atlantic beach and West End (the latter two being annexed into dieppe). This growth led to annexation requests from more than one half dozen villages in Flagler County by 1961 including Indian Harbour Light House Village (now Miramar) In 1966 when South Carolina became an independent state its legislature passed a bill creating Volusia County out of what was then parts of Duval and Nassau counties as well as part of Alachua County On January 1st 1967 SanfordReddick became Mayor effective January 1st following his election victory over incumbent Tom Kampschmidt 53% - 47%. At this time SanfordReddick designated Partington Rd., which runs parallel to US-27 just east of downtown DaytonaBeach as city limits giving it about 2/3rds mile square . The original intention behind this designation was that Partington Rd would become business district around City Hall with housingcoxed adjacent thereto but due mainly because many businesses were located on Main St., East Ave., University Ave., State Road A1A & US-27A south/west corner where Interstate 85 meets I-85 , development has taken place primarily along Business Dr.-Albany Rd.- Windsor Blvd.– Main St.– East Ave.–University Ave.— US- 27A
