As the population of Daytona Beach and its surrounding areas grew, so did the need for a national guard. On September 17, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the National Guard Bureau Act which created the first national guard unit in Florida. The unit was made up of men from across the United States who were called to duty by President Roosevelt as a part of his New Deal program. The units served in various capacities until World War II when they were disbanded due to budgetary reasons. The creation of the National Guard Bureau and the disbanding of the units in 1942 left behind a legacy of service that is still evident today. In Daytona Beach, it has been through our community’s history and culture that we have come to know and love our national guard unit- The Daytona Beach Police Department (DOB). Ourunit has been a part of our community for over sixty years and is an important part of our city’s history.
There is no specific date or time when the national guard was first formed in country, but it is generally believed that they were first established as a Supplementary force to the military. However, over time they have taken on more and more of a standalone role within the government. The national guard are currently made up of around 12,000 soldiers who can be mobilized at any time for domestic or international duty. They play an important role in both the regular army and police forces, but their primary purpose is to protect society from harm. There are two main types of gifts that may be given to members of the national guard- National Guard Medals and National Guard Awards. National Guard Medals are designed to commemorate an individual’s service to the nation and may include a medal plate with the individual’s name, rank, unit or branch of service (e.g., brigadier general). National Guard Awards are presented in recognition of achievements such as bravery or heroism in duty. They may include items such as a badge, scarf or other article of clothing
The National Guard was first organized in Florida in 1907. The Guard's first officer, Captain John P. Dickson, resigned after only three months on the job due to financial problems. In 1912, the Guard was redesignated as a Militia and it's first colonel, Colonel John W. Nicholson, served from 1911-1915. From 1917-1920 the Militia was divided into two commands; one under the command of Major General James Moulton and one under Major General George Custer. In 1941, the Florida National Guard was activated for World War II and it became known as "The 46th Infantry Division." After hostilities ended in 1945, the division headquarters were located at Camp Blanding in Daytona Beach until 1949 when they moved to Fort Pierce Naval Air Station where they remain to this day. Afterward, Col Johnny Mackey took command of The Guardsmen and led them through various peacekeeping missions throughout Latin America before their return home in 1969. In 1978 Maj Jeffery Decker assumed command of The Guardsmen and led them through Operation Neptune's Spear which helped bring an end to apartheid South Africa; he later became Commandant emeritus with The guardsmen effective May 1st 1998
Daytona Beach, Florida is a city located in the state of Florida. The population was 29,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Orlando metropolitan area and is bounded by Orange County to the south and west, Brevard County to the north, and Palm Beach County to the east. Daytona Beach sits on a barrier island that separated it from Chiefland until 1892 when it became its own municipality. It has since been annexed by both Palm Beach and Brevard Counties. The first Europeans to visit Daytona were Spanish explorers in 1565 who named it La Vela de la India (the head). The English explorer William Davenport visited in 1795 and called it "Beach Haven". In 1892, after being separated from Chiefland for years due to Indian attacks, Daytona became its own municipality with boundaries that included parts of both Palm Beach and Brevard Counties. The name "Daytona" was given to this town by General James Hays during his expedition in 1894 for his military campaign known as the Seminole Wars against Native Americans. In 1929, an amusement park called Daytona Beach Pier Park opened on downtown's original landfill which had been purchased by developer Ransom Ellington Jr.. Ellington built a series of grand hotels within what are now four downtown blocks: Convention Center/Marriott Hotel; State Fairgrounds/Pier Sixteen; Commercial Boulevard/Hitachi Building;[5][6] today's Fourth Street Promenade between State Fairgrounds (now called Speedway) and South Main Street intersection.[7] On October 1st 1928 – more than 60 years after incorporation – Daytona Beach voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation into neighboring Palm Beaches Township effective November 1st 1928 At about this time two other townships merged into Palm Beaches Township- Flagler Springs Borough on December 4th 1957[8][9] Following protracted negotiations with Flagler Springs Borough officials over annexing much larger portions of neighbouring Volusia County before they did so themselves circa 1959,[10][11], annexation finally happened without any controversy on January 2nd 1958 resulting in an even more populous community situated along one long street artery
