The Daytona Beach Naval Shipyard was founded in 1924 as the Miami Navy Yard. In 1938, it became the Jacksonville Naval Shipyard and then the Daytona Beach Naval Shipyard. The shipyards were closed in 1966 and 1970 due to budget cuts by then-President Lyndon Johnson. They reopened in 1976 as the Dolphin naval shipyard. After being closed again in 1990, they reopened as the Daytona Beach Navy Yard once again in 1992 after a $5 million renovation. In 1993, Commodore John Tilton took command of the Coast Guard cutter "Hercules" which was docked at DPNAVY's yard for conversion into a decommissioned United States Coast Guard cutter. In 1995, Commodore Tilton became commanding officer of USS "Hercules". He served until 2001 when he took command of USS "Ponce" which had been converted into a museum vessel at DPNAVY's yard. In 2006, Commodore Tilton was succeeded by Rear Admiral David Ladd who served until his retirement in 2009. Since its founding, the Daytona Beach Naval Shipyard has been home to more than 1,000 sailors and marines from all over the world who have worked on various types of navy ships including submarines, destroyers and patrol boats. It is also home to more than 350 workers who maintain marine vessels brought into and out of service at DPNAVY's yard including both new construction and conversions of existing vessels. The maritime history associated with this facility is often alluded to when talking about Daytona Beach or any other port city - it is an important part of its culture that cannot be ignored!
