De Land, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,868 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The name "De Land" comes from the Seminole word "deland" meaning "a place where corn and beans are grown." DeLand was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk as a military outpost on Mobile Bay for the protection of settlers traveling through that area on their way to Cuba or Mexico City. As a result of its location and presence on Mobile Bay, DeLand quickly became an important inland shipping point for goods carried from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi to Tampa and Pensacola. In 1841, Jacksonville corporation was organized with a capital stock of $1 million (equivalent to $102 million in current dollars). In 1846 Jacksonville incorporated as a city under charter granted by the state of Florida; it had about 6500 residents. On July 12,1898, DeLand incorporation as an unincorporated community with 5500 residents took place under law No. 153 of 1898 which provided that: "The legislature finds and declares that there is hereby established within this community an institution beneficial to the public health called 'The Municipal Hospital.'" During World War II DeLand played host to over 100000 soldiers who were quartered there during their training before deployment overseas into combat. Today many businesses still operate here such as JCPenney store (now Macy's), Barnes & Noble bookstore chain (now Goodreads), FedEx Ground service provider (now FedEx) and Piggly Wiggly fast food restaurant chain (now Papa John's). Over time, many other businesses have sprung up around Lillian's including several shoe stores (including Ziegfeld's), banks, convenience stores (such as Quaker Oats) and more recently an animal hospital/breeder complex called The Barnyard that features performances from various artists throughout the year. De Land, Florida was founded in 1836 by Andrew De Land, a Scottish man who had come to the United States to establish a new colony. The town became an important center for cotton production and commerce. In the early years of its existence, De Land was known as a haven for free blacks and Native Americans. However, by the 1840s, white settlers had begun arriving in increasing numbers, and DeLand began to experience tension between its residents and the newcomers. By 1851, however, most of De Land's African American residents were either dead or out of town; the town's only Native American inhabitant left in 1851. In 1865, when Union troops arrived in Florida to fight during the American Civil War, De Land came under military occupation until it was abandoned in 1870.
