The De Land, Florida Army Garrison was established in 1881 as the first military installation in the area. The garrison served as a base of operations for the Florida Department of War and later became an active duty infantry regiment. In World War II, the garrison served as an airfield and later became an artillery battalion. Today, the Army Garrison is home to the 9th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which is responsible for providing combat support to units in De Land and surrounding areas. De Land, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Leon County, Florida. It is part of the Tallahassee-Westallah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. The DeLand area was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 18th century. De Land was named for General James De Land, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Florida. In 1868, a post office called "De Land" was founded in what is now Tallahassee and remained open until 1898 when it moved to Westallah because of increased mail volume from Tallahassee. A train depot called "DeLand Depot" stood on the present site of DeLand until 1923 when it was replaced by a new station on US-4 which serves today as the townsquare of Westallah. In 1925, The Palm Beach Co., an oil company, began operations in what is now DeLand and soon became one of the largest landholders in Leon County with over 2,000 acres (1 km2). Today's businesses include several shopping malls and restaurants along US-4 throughout much of central and eastern Leon County including parts of Sawgrass Rancho Villages development near Fort Walton Beach; Highlands Ranch developments east of Lake Okeechobee; Poinciana Gardens west of Miramar; Boca Raton developments southwest of Miami Lakes; North Port developments north outside Jupiter; Titusville developments east off I-95 near Titusville Beach.; Plantation Village communities east off US Highway 27 between Apalachicola and Cape Coral; Peachtree Hills Communities northwest off US Highway 11 between Jacksonville and Naples.; Pinellas Park Communities northeast off State Road 516 between Clearwater Beach and Dunedin ; Oviedo Communities southeast off State Road 921 between Live Oak Cove Marina - just outside St Petersburg -and Oviedo Peninsula . Many homes still stand from this era including many built around 1905 or earlier like Mrs Hargrave's two story red brick house on Old Sims Road that stands to this day next to her parents home forfeited during World War II In 1990s construction began on Interstate 4 which will eventually connect all these areas together creating a larger region known as "The Tampa Bay Area." This project has since stalled due to budgetary concerns but has been revived by developers interested in exploiting undeveloped land within The Tampa Bay Area for housing products such as offices or mixed use properties etc.. As part as helping spur development within The Tampa Bay Area there are also plans underway to develop downtown Orlando into an major city center similar to Atlanta or New York City with large hotel/office complexes etc.. All this activity has led some locals to nickname their community "TampaBayTown." Further south some people have started calling their community "BocaLobos."

The name "De Land" comes from the Indian word “dela” meaning "land." De Land was named after General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, who had died in 1827.
