De Land is a town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is one of the most rural areas in Florida. De Land is named after General James Wilkinson de Land who fought in the American Revolution and served as a brigadier general in the Seminole Wars. The first settlements were made on Clearwater Key by pioneer Captain John Ketchum on November 5, 1824. By 1830 there were ten families living here including four white men: Chauncey Haggerty, Elisha Pease, Job Chapman and Stephen Aiken. In 1831 Colonel John McIntosh built Post Office #1 here which became DeLand on December 1st of that year. In 1835 two small log homes were erected by Mr. George Prentice for his wife Elizabeth (Fenton) Prentice and their six children from childhood friend Amos Fitzpatrick’s home across the Keys on Longboat Key; these homes still stand today near present day Gate Service Road & Utopia Road just east of US 41N exit 167A (exit 12 for I-95). Mrs. Prentice leased her home back to Mr. Prentice three years later until he died in 1840 when she sold it to Percival Tryon who had been living there with his family since 1784 when they settled along what are now I-95 & US 41N exit 167A (exit 12). Tryon renamed it Clearwater Key Farms after himself while living there but soon got rid of all traces of civilization including post office and built only a few frame houses over time! Percival Tryon's successor William Bradford purchased Clearwater Key Farms from him in 1851 as part of an effort to develop it into a plantation society for African Americans through forced labor during Reconstruction followed by white flight during World War II due to racial discrimination laws passed thenCHAPTER VIII – DE LAND TOWNSHIP FEDERAL RESERVE CORPORATION PAGE 7 OF 21 In 1907 Captains Frederick Diggs & Wm Batson bought Clearwater Key Farms from Bradford for $4,000 cash plus five horses! They began operation as “Batson Bros Fisheries Company” fishing vessels outfitting locals with fresh seafood beginning operations at Doane's Landing which would eventually become known as "Clearwater Key." With commercialism came social problems caused by race - many black fishermen working aboard "Batson Bros" reported being treated unfairly because they could not swim or ride shotgun while other whites did so free! After several court cases brought against them by local citizens this business failed within 6 months becoming saddled with heavy debt acquired through extortionate prices paid to charter captains/owners etc.. Captain Diggs retired around 1960 having caught more than 100 fish each day offshore!. He left behind his beautiful house related museum inside current day Gate Service Rd./Utopia Rd., now used as storage units for some years before being restored again between 2002-2004 following Hurricane Katrina! The first European to explore De Land was Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in 1513. He named it San Miguel de la Vega after his patron saint, Miguel de la Vega. De Land, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,899 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The community was founded by Dutch settlers in 1836 as "Allendale", after Allendale on Lake Okeechobee. Its name change to De Land in 1861 when it became a part of Seminole County. The post office at De Land was established in 1868 and discontinued in 1893; the first mail carrier was George Aiken. In 1898, De Land became an incorporated village with a mayor and three trustees; it had one school and no churches or other public services. In 1907, its incorporation status changed to town after the state legislature passed a bill granting townhood to every county that achieved population growth of 10 percent or more within five years without annexing any other settlements. The first town meeting took place on October 8th of that year under the new name of "Townsend". On July 1st 1908 voter approval for annexation into Kissimmee were granted by vote from both Townsend and DeLand residents; however annexation never took place because Kissimmee City annexed nearby Clearwater two days later. On November 15th 1912 local officials legalized gambling with $1 million being offered for start up capital by Henry Hirschfeld & Sons of New York City., which forced Townsend's closure as gaming continued until 1933 when alloyd laws were repealed effective January 1st 1934 (see below). In 1932-33 Townsend also operated what is now known as "The Gambling Hall" restaurant/bar at 4757 Eaton Road which served refreshments until 1974 when it closed due to advances in technology leading to the legalization of lotteries throughout America with restaurants serving food only since 1984 see below). A small shopping center called "The Village" opened between US 192nd Street and US 27th Avenue east side on December 3rd 1951 adjacent to then current day Golden State Mall where groceries such as Walgreens are located today while also including an amusement park - now known as Universal Studios - built on former farmland leased frombroward county back then
