The town was founded by John DeLand in 1837 as a post office and trading center on the Gulf of Mexico. The name comes from Dutch "deland" meaning "place where land is bought and sold". In 1865, George Washington Morris established an agricultural college in De Land that became FAMU University; it now has over 100,000 students across seven campuses in Escambia and Seminole Counties. In 1892, a railroad line was built through De Land to connect Pensacola with Tampa via Escambia County; the town prospered until World War II when it lost its importance as a shipping point. After the war, however, De Land regained some of its former glory as a manufacturing center for textiles and other products such as cigars and furniture. Today it remains an important cultural hub for the region with diverse shops and restaurants throughout its downtown core.

De Land was a small, unincorporated community in St. Johns County, Florida, located on the east side of DeLand Key. It is now part of Titusville. The community was named for General John De Land, who fought in the Seminole Wars and later served as governor of Florida from 1827 to 1830. In 1868, De Land had a post office with ZIP code 33021. The population was 146 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settler in what is now De Land was James Auld, who arrived in 1798 with his family from Scotland. He established himself along the banks of the St Johns River and built a cabin near what is now downtown Titusville. For many years there were no residents in De Land because it depended on imported goods for its food and shelter. In 1867, General John Doland took command of Union Troops stationed at Fort Brooke on the Miami River and decided to move westward into Indian Territory to fight Seminoles under Creek Chief Osceola Sr.. On July 26th he made his way downriver to Deep water Key where he met Captain Jno Matson ( founder of Matson's marina) and Captain Wiley Wolcott (founder of Wolcott's grocery). Doland asked Matson if he could take possession of some land north of Deep Water Key that they were using as an encampment for their troops; Matson agreed and gave Doland 3 wagonloads full of cornmeal, flour, butter, coffee beans, sugar & salt which he set out on horseback to purchase from various Native American chiefs living around Fort Brooke garrisoned by Confederate troops led by General Edmund Kirby Smith! Captain JnoMatson met him near present day Royal Palm Drive (just south of modern day US-441)near present day Gainesville Boulevard; both men enjoyed talking about their new venture when they saw each other coming They rode up together waiting for their horses When JnoMatson dismounted he handed His horse off to Doland After getting back on His Horse He said "I sure don't know how you're going to get this load any further" To which Doland replied "Don't worry Captain I've got help" From then until today everyone has called this spot – "JnoMatson point" or just simply "JNoMPoint". Captain JnoM Watson landed here about 1840 during British occupation
De Land was a small town in Orange County, Florida from 1835 to 1868. It was located on the eastern bank of the St. Johns River and on the border of what is now Hendry County and Brooks County. The town was named for De Land, an Indian chief who died in 1786.
