In the early 21st century, De Land became known for its role as a center for pornographic film production and video gaming distribution across the state of Florida; this industry has helped contribute to its nickname " Pornopolis." In addition to pornography production and distribution, DeLand also hosts several conventions each year that attract thousands of visitors from throughout Florida and beyond: the Southeast Jacksonville Convention & Visitors Bureau reports that events held in DeLand have averaged more than 25,000 attendees since 2002! De Land, Florida was an American Indian community that was located in Pinellas County, Florida. The community consisted of a few hundred people and was founded by the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 1824. The tribe relocated to De Land after being forced out of their original settlement on Fort Brooke by the United States during the Seminole Wars. The community developed around a small fort and trading post known as Fort Brooke. In 1837, the fort was abandoned and its inhabitants were forced to migrate to what is now Tampa Bay. The town prospered for several years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1853. The town's remaining residents began to recolonize De Land in 1861 when it became part of Hillsborough County, Florida. Afterward, the population gradually decreased as land available for farming declined and there were no opportunities for economic development. However, some people still remained until 1970 when it merged with nearby Stonington into one municipality called DeLand-Stonington.
