De Land, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Osceola County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name De Land comes from English settlers who first landed there in 1839 as part of Treaty #1 between Seminole Indians and the United States. They named their new settlement after James Pemberton's father-in-law, John DeLand. The community was platted in 1840 by Alexander McMurtry and others under the name "Eldorado." In 1845 it became known as "Deland" after James Pemberton's brother-in-law, George Eldorado. In 1902, De Land became a county seat of Osceola County when it was created from parts of Duval and Calhoun counties. In 1920 it became a city when it amalgamated with Jacksonville. In 1984 it reverted to its original status as a CDP when Jacksonville merged with Osceola County again. According to the 2000 US Census report, De Land had a population of 4,052 people; 2% more than its 1990 population estimate but unchanged from its 1998 population estimate due to growth within Jacksonville which has outgrown De Land’s limited housing stock since that time According to2010 US Census data: The racial makeup of De Land is 93% white while 7% black or African American; 0% Native American; 5% Asian Pacific Islander; 1% multiracial; 2% Hispanic or Latino
