De Land, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population of De Land was 1,681 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. De Land is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the east, North Miami Beach to the north and west, and Cutler Bay to the south. The area that now De Land was first inhabited by Tequesta Indians who lived near what is now downtown Miami. The area was platted in 1836 by James Purdy under the name "Miami". In 1861, land around this intersection became part of what is now South Beach on Biscayne Bay. In 1911, DeLand acquired its current location on a tract originally given to it by pioneer Drury Wagoner for $2 per acre (later raised to $10). By 1914 there were only 100 residents living in DeLand when it became a town under an act approved by Congress which gave inhabitants voting rights and established a Board of Trustees with authority over public buildings and education. The first schools were built in 1915 at 16th Street and Northwest First Avenue; they were moved to their present site in 1916 when the old school building burned down. In 1927 construction began on what would become one of DeLand's most important landmarks – The Queen Anne's Schoolhouse which still stands today and serves as a working classroom for local high school students during term time while the new school building is used as headquarters for community services such as library research and development or special events like graduation ceremonies or family reunions. A fire destroyed many homes in 1929 but not The Queen Anne's Schoolhouse which continued serving as center for educational programs until 1971 when it was replaced by Grady High School across Northwest First Avenue from where it had been since 1915.
