De Land is a town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton metropolitan area. The first De Land settlement was founded on October 21, 1892 by J.P. DeLand and his wife Anna Holland for their family of six children; two were born in Nassau County, Bahamas and four were born in Collier County. In 1896 J.P.'s father died leaving behind land that would later become De Land Township. On January 3, 1898 Captains A.W Shriver (USN) and Wm Henson (USN) organized the first volunteer fire department in northeast Florida with a total membership of nine men from DeLand Township and twelve residents of Plantation Point subdivision adjacent to it which had also responded to an early alarm call about a possible gas leak at Beechwood Cemetery on the Territory boundary line between Nassau andCollier Counties In 1905 Captain Shriver donated land to build what would become known as De Land Naval Air Station which became one of NortheastFlorida's most important military installations during World War II providing air support for American forces fighting against Nazi Germany On December 15th 1925 Captain Shriver donated 2 acres (0 hectares) of his AFB property located east of present day Neptune City to begin development as Fort Lauderdale Municipal Airport adjoining the original airport site In 1928 the first school building was erected on this site when Lighthouse Point Elementary School opened followed by John Fenton Intermediate School in 1929 then Park View High School in 1930 . In 1942 Gainesville Regional Airport opened providing commercial airline service until it closed down in 1990 . In 1959 Fort Lauderdale Municipal Airport reopened as Miami-Dade International Airport after being acquired by Miami-Dade County along with other properties within its boundaries De Land has experienced many changes over its history including becoming an incorporated community with voting rights granted to it on February 17, 1913 following passage of legislation establishing county government by referendum The post office here began operations on November 5th 1912 with mail arriving from Asbury Park Floridas via boat from St Johns River harbor . The name de land was selected based upon how well situated it seemed to be for all aspects connected with agriculture such as market gardens, hogs & pigs yards etc…the town grew rapidly due if not primarily because people coming here could get access to quality education regardless of income or social status
