The Marine Corps deployed gift history in De Land, Florida on Christmas Eve of 1951. The Marines who served in that deployment were the nucleus around which a community sprang up to support their service. On December 24, 1951, Commandant of the Marine Corps General James H. Gavin announced that marines would be deploying for six months on Guam and then returning home. This was an unprecedented event as no other branch of the military had ever deployed so far outside its own country. On December 25, 1951, Marines from Camp Pendleton arrived at De Land Airport with gifts for local residents and businesses. In 1953 a second detachment deployed to Okinawa where they donated clothing including uniforms (the first American military detachment to do so) as well as quantities of candy bars and cigarettes which were distributed among soldiers living aboard ship while they battled against Japan's forces ashore. In 1954 a third detachment sailed from San Diego en route to Korea where they donated many items such as bed sheets (for homeless veterans), canned goods (to help feed troops stationed there), gasoline cans (forlighting up barracks at night) and even guitars! It was truly an amazing display of giving back by our Marines who had given everything else except blood money! This Deployment is still remembered fondly today through photos being taken inside ships upon return trip Ports de France/Spain/Japan etc., showing all sorts of goodies being collected along the way like hair ties/tie clips/shirts etc... De Land is a small town located in southern Florida, about 33 miles south of Tampa. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. De Land is one of several towns in Volusia County that are part of the Orlando- Kissimmee-Hollywood Combined Statistical Area. The history of De Land goes back to 1854 when it was settled by Englishman John Crouch and his wife Catharine (née Magee). In 1859, they built a log cabin on what is now US 17 east of the present day town center. They named their settlement after the ancient Italian city ofland near Naples, Italy. The first post office was established in 1860 and activity continued until 1865 when de land became an independent township under the governance of the Seminole Tribe. In 1907, following annexation by Sanford, De Land became a city with its own government and mayor/council. It had a population of over 100 people when it joined Orlando City Football Club in 1958 as one of its original six cities within MLS. In 1970, following passage by state legislators providing for communitywide consolidation into one municipality under Mayor Bob Lovell’s leadership, de land reverted back to its separate governmental form with elected officials from municipal districts rather than from individual “city blocks” like those seen today. Today’s economy relies heavily on agriculture and tourism which have contributed greatly to support both local businesses and local schools; many residents still refer to themselves simply as “delanders” or simply as “townies." There are only five full time jobs in town while most residents work outside their homes through various businesses or services available throughout the county including grocery stores, banks, mechanic shops etc., making it difficult for newcomers to get started where they want or need to be within town limits - something that has always been slightly unique about this small but prosperous community!

The De Land plantation was founded in 1801 by Nicholas de Land. The land was originally given to Isaac Payne, a British subject, as part of the donation that he made to Florida in 1763. In 1821, John A. O’Keefe purchased the plantation from Nicolas de Land and continued to run it until his death in 1853. He had two sons, James A. O’Keefe and John P. O’Keefe, who ran it jointly for about 25 years before it passed into the hands of their daughter Alice Loyde O’Keefe after her father's death in 1907. Alice Loyde O'Keefe sold the plantation to Harry Huggins in 1921 and continued running it until his death in 1932. It then passed onto his son-in-law Rufus Woldenberg who ran it until his death in 1947. In 1951, it was purchased by Julius Burchfield who managed it until its sale to Nelson Rockefeller in 1969. It is now managed by The Blackwater Group which plans on keeping most of the original features including slave quarters and outbuildings intact while expanding its acreage by acquiring other plantations throughout the area
