De Land is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach–Biloxi Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit De Land were Spanish traders who landed on the island in 1565 and named it "Isla de la Bahía" (Island of the Bay). In 1778, Englishman James Cook charted what he thought was an uninhabited island off the coast of Florida and named it Marathon after his ship "Marathon". In 1836, John Kirby established Kirby's Plantation on what is now Main Street. He became one of America's earliest cotton planters and developed a large share of this country's cotton production. His plantation was destroyed by fire in 1849 but he rebuilt it and continued to grow cotton until his death in 1860. He left behind a $10 million fortune that has been invested in several businesses including insurance, real estate development, agriculture, tourism and education. De Land has had two mayors: Wm Hallett from 1951-1959 and Don Herrington from 1959-1978; four members of the school board: Mrs. Jessie Aiken (1948-1966), Mrs. Leroy Boggs (1946-1965), Mrs. Mildred Burkholder (1962-1967) and Mr. Joe Sledge (1974-1981). The current mayor is Wade Miller with term effective January 1st 2020 through November 30th 2029

De Land, Florida is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The date of its founding is unknown, but it likely occurred during the early 1860s when settlers arrived in what is now DeLand from all over North America. At that time, the region was inhabited by Timucua and Arapaho people. The first post office in De Land was established on December 12, 1868. At that time it consisted of just six residents and served as the outpost for a then new postal service called Waycross Road Post Office which had been established about two weeks earlier. In 1872 a school was built for students in what later became town hall square and operated until 1974 when it closed due to lack of funding. In 1913 De Land had its first grocery store which remains open today as The Grocery Store on Main Street. In 1916 there were three churches located in town: one Baptist (later First Baptist), one Methodist (later Spanish moss Presbyterian) and one Catholic (later Archdioceseof Miami). The first fire department in De Land was organized on May 8, 1917 with four members including Waverly Hargrave who soon joined forces with his brother-in-law Frank Cline to form an amateur firefighters organization known as "Theippus". In 1921 De Land had its only garage opened when JB Hunt leased land from Eby's Drug Store to build a 3/4 mile structure featuring two stories and 24 stalls using methods involving horse drawn wagons drawn by oxen or dogs; this garage would remain operational until 1971 when it burned down following an accident while being used for storage space by local farmers after Hurricane Andrew passed through the area; this event also resulted in the opening of nearby Ponte Vedra Beach's first proper shopping mall which would remain open until 1995 renamed after Governor Jeb Bush before being demolished completely within five years
De Land was a small community located in Duval County, Florida. It was established in 1892 by J.P. DeLand and his wife Anna Belle DeLand. The community had a population of about seventy-five people when it was destroyed by fire in 1942.
