In 1881, an area of De Land, Florida that was part of Pensacola County was annexed by Tallahassee. The area now includes much of the modern day city of Tallahassee. The first white settlers in what is today De Land were Captain John Hogg and his family who arrived in 1786. They were followed by other pioneers such as James Dickey and Caleb Smith in the early 1800s. In 1821, a tract of land measuring 130 acres was patented to Captain George McDowall for $10 per acre. This land later became known as "The Cattle Range." In 1839, the Creek Nation (later Seminole) purchased 640 acres around present-day Tallahassee fromCaptain John Hogg for $2 per acre. This purchase made it possible for them to pasture their horses on the property which they still use to this day. Due to its strategic location, The Cattle Range served as a military base during both the American Civil War and postwar Reconstruction Periods.
