The Florida National Guard has been guarding the state of De Land since 1959. The guard is made up of both military and civilian members. It is one of the oldest national guard organizations in the United States. The Guard was formed to provide a deterrent against possible insurrection in rural areas. The Guard also provides support for local law enforcement officers and helps promote safety and security within the community. While its primary purpose is to protect citizens, the Guard also has a history of charitable donations and volunteerism. In recent years, donations have come from individuals, businesses, schools, and foundations. National guardsmen have served in many wars throughout their history, but World War II was perhaps their most active role as a national guard organization. Over 1,500 soldiers were mobilized from De Land to serve in Italy and Europe during that war. After the war ended, De Land’s National Guard began preparations for another conflict—the Korean War—but never actually entered into combat until after the end of that conflict in 1953. Since then, there have been several deployments to numerous conflicts around the world including Operation Desert Storm in 1990 and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001; Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003; Afghanistan in 2006; Hurricane Katrina on August 29th 2005;and Puerto Rico hurricane relief operations starting on September 20th 2017

The De Land National Guard was organized on December 15, 1917. The unit was first called the Florida National Guard and served as part of the Department of War until 1920. On July 1, 1920, the Florida National Guard became a separate branch of the United States military and was headquartered in Tallahassee. In 1946, the DeLand National Guard was re-organized into a battalion under command of a colonel. The battalion served as an infantry brigade through toactivated in 1972. On October 3, 1978, President Jimmy Carter designated the DeLand Battalion as one of 327 units nationwide that were activated for Operation Neptune's Spear during the Iran-Iraq War. The battalion lasted until May 1980 when it disbanded due to budgetary cuts.
De Land, Florida is a city in Clay County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clay County and lies on the eastern border of Polk County. The town began as a small community called "Natchez" on the banks of the Kissimmee River. In 1824, Nicholas de Land purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land along with other property in what is now Clay County from John Clinchy for $2 an acre ($0.68 per square kilometer). De Land named his original location after his father-in-law's estate in France: "Land du Lac", meaning "Lakeland." He built a log cabin there and started trading goods with Indians and white traders. By 1830 he had erected a sawmill and started exporting lumber to England and other parts of Europe. In 1835, de Land married Anna Maria Haggerty; they moved to their present home near DeLand in 1840. They were the parents of eight children: four sons (George Washington Haggerty III., James Covington Haggerty IV., Nicholas Leland Haggerty), two daughters (AnnaMaria (née Keyes), Elizabeth Miner), one son-in-law (John Turney Sayers) - all born before 1840 - six grandchildren - three sisters-in-law (Mary Acheson Hunter Douglas Smith Price Ware Carpenter Swain Putnam Keyes Fenton Keyes), two brothers-in-laws (John Putnam Keyes Sr.), three nieces (Hannah Putnam Keyes Everhart Swain Sampson,) and one nephew (-[Henry] Prentice Acheson). In 1840 de Land sold his holdings to Jno Prentice Acheson for $6000 cash plus 20% interest in any future sale thereof. Acheson operated a general store until 1850 when he founded the first steamboat landing on Lake Okeechobee which became known as Achewood Landing due to him being its first charter member according to “History Of Polk County” by Lewis Hillabee published 1912 ; later renamed Stevedore Landing because developing it into an area for shipbuilding/repair etc.. This landing supported paddleboats that traded between Anacostia Riverbelow and DeLand until about 1920 when electric boats replaced them but continued using this landing name until about 1930s when it was abandoned because it was becoming difficult to access due to changed conditions ashore including high water levels caused by hurricanes early that decade
The National Guard has a long and varied history. In 1881, the first national guard unit was organized in Georgia. The unit was called the "Atlanta Rifles." The first national guard unit in Texas was also organized in 1881. The unit was called the "Houston Rifles." From 1881-1898, there were only state units of the National Guard. There were no federal units until 1898 when Congress created the 1st Infantry Division of the National Guard to serve as an auxiliary to the U.S. Army and provide security for American citizens during World War I. After World War I, there were many more federal units created including special forces and air force units. The 1st Infantry Division played a critical role in World War II by providing security for American citizens and military installations throughout Europe and Asia. Following World War II, many states formed their own national guard units while some disbanded them altogether while others evolved into professionalized militias such as Armor Guards or Marines Corps that performed various security functions on a regional basis throughout America. Today, there are over 120 different national guard regiments across America performing a variety of tasks from ceremonial duties to homeland defense or counterterrorism operations depending on what is needed at any given time or location within America’s borders (i.e., border patrols, homeland security missions, disaster preparedness). These troops come from all walks of life with men and women from all backgrounds who share one common goal: safeguarding our nation’s interests both domestically and abroad. And although they may be deployed anywhere in America as needed, these troops always maintain close ties with their state counterparts through annual reunions that allow for shared memories, laughs and traditions that have helped keep ourguards together since before we ever knew how to read sign language!
