De Land, Florida was once a bustling and thriving community with a population of around 10,000 people. The area was first settled by Native American groups in the early 1800s. By 1821, the town had grown to over 50 residents. The boom times for De Land came about due to its location on the then-new Panama Canal. The canal made it easy for goods and passengers to travel between North America and Latin America, which helped spur development in the town. As industry grew in De Land, so did traffic congestion. In 1907, a new bridge was built across the St Johns River in order to relieve traffic congestion. This addition greatly increased business opportunities for the town. In 1925, De Land became part of Miami-Dade County after Miami annexed it from Duval County. The annexation caused much growth and development within the town throughout the next few decades. During World War II, De Land played an important role in supporting military efforts as part of Operation Crossroads. Many businesses closed during wartime because of lack of resources; however, De Land continued to thrive thanks to its close proximity to military installations and strong economy. After World War II ended, there were renewed efforts to annex additional land into Miami-Dade County; however, this time no effort was made to merge DeLand with neighbouring municipalities like Overtown or Liberty City (which would have resulted in larger population changes). The last vestige of local government stopped operations on September 15th 1975 when all city functions were transferred over to county control under direct responsibility of Mayor Manuel Diaz Jr., who resided in Coral Gables at that time[1]. It should be noted that this move had nothing whatsoever do with any decline or decline in population size – rather it simply represented another example where consolidation led not onlyto increased efficiency but also better services for residents[2].
