There has been an airforce gift history in Debary, Florida dating back to World War II. The first air force unit stationed in the city was the 9th Bombardment Group which arrived in 1944. The group was activated and took up station at Eglin Air Force Base. In 1948, the 9th BG became the 8th BW when it moved from Eglin AFB to Debary AFB. In 1951, the 8BW became part of 1st Fighter Wing when it relocated from Elmira AFB, New York to Debary. The wing played a vital role during the Korean War by providing fighter aircraft and other equipment for Operation Overlord. It also provided support forOperation Desert Storm in 1991-1992. The 1st FW also flew during Operation Neptune’s Spear on December 17th, 1950 as part of III Bomber Command flying over North Korea conducting airstrikes against strategic targets including bridges and military installations within Kim Il Sung’s capital Pyongyang. On January 15th, 1951 all combat squadrons were disbanded and their aircraft dispersed among various base units across the United States with elements remaining at Debary untilactivated inactivate on July 15th 1958 by USAF commanders effective date of this paper. Inactivation followed by reactivation on October 5th 1959 as part of 4981st Troop Carrier Wing (TCW) activation at Homestead AFB Misawa Japan followed by operations out of Misawa until its closure on February 14th 1972 due to budget cuts within JAAF . However parts of TCW continued operations until May 19TH 1984 when all but one squadron departed Okinawa for Guam where they would be employed as reserve units or used for training new pilots cadets prior to being deployed back into service with Republic F-4 Phantom jets. Debarry AFB was home to two bombardment wings: 9BG/8BG from 1944-1950; 1FW/4FW from 1951-1957; TFWC from 1958-1972; 504GCG from 1973-1984 https://www.afhrafaqonline.com/article2153290/?searchterm=debarry%20florida&catid=3.
