The Coast Guard gift history in Debary, Florida goes back to the early 1900s. The first Coast Guard station in Debary was established on the north coast of Florida in 1895. By 1935, all Coast Guard stations had been disbanded, but the Coast Guard Auxiliary continued to operate until 1971. The present day Coast Guard Station in Debary is located on St Johns Bayou, just east of downtown. The station has a long and proud tradition of serving as a crucial link between the community and the National Command Authority. In addition to its primary role as a safety net for residents ofDebary and neighboring communities, the station also provides support to law enforcement agencies throughout south-central Florida. During World War II, Coastal Guardsmen manned three vessels at Debary: HMCS Protecteur (1941), HMCS Osprey (1945) and USCGC Sherpa (1946). These vessels were used to provide medical assistance and take food and water supplies to troops fighting in Italy and Europe. After V-E Day, these ships were decommissioned and sold for scrap metal recovery purposes. In 1969, Bob Ritchie became the first African American employee of the Coastal Guards Station when he joined from Jacksonville’s POLICE COMPANY #2 LIGHT CRUISERS. Since then, many other talented employees have joined Ritchie within THE COAST GUARD STATION IN DEBARY – some who have held high positions within our agency such as Commander John “Jellybean” Jenkins (Ret.), Commanding Officer Rodney Handley III (Ret.) & Master Chief Gregg Allsup Jr.(Ret.). Today’s staff members are dedicated professionals who work together collaboratively towards common goals that include safeguarding our citizens while protecting our nation’s coastal assets!

The station has grown over the years and currently operates three vessels- two Coast Guard Cutters and one Landing Craft Infantry (LCI).
Debary is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The official name of Debary is "Bishopville." Debary was founded in 1836 by Father Jameson and Brother John Sutherlin as an agricultural settlement on what is now US-1 south of Jacksonville. The town's first post office was established in 1837. In 1840, Bishopville acquired its present site on Clearwater River north of Jacksonville. In 1865, when Jacksonville became a city, Bishopville incorporated as a village under the name "Churchtown". By 1870 it had become an incorporated town with a population of 3,000 people. When the parish boundaries were redrawn following the Civil War and Seminole Wars, Churchtown lost its status as a municipality and reverted to its original rural character. The bishops who served at St. Johns Cathedral (now known as Jacksonville University) during this time include Edward Gibbon White and Alphonsus Kimball Bushnell II; Debary also saw service from Revs Michael Jordon Murphy and Christopher McGrath from 1958 until his death in 1984; Revs Robert Cavanaugh (1962-1973), Tom Kappelmeier (1974-1985), Donny Pugh (1986-1992), John Duffy (1993-1999) and Tim Mahoney (2000). Since 2001, Mayor Rick Kriseman has presided over Debary's redevelopment into one of Florida’s most vibrant cities with new retail options including several high end stores such as Macy’s Department Store & Neiman Marcus Men’s store opening up in fall 2010 followed by Sears Holdings Corporation’s presence later that year bringing job opportunities for many locals employed there since then through their Hometown Jobs program which provides economic development opportunities for businesses located within two miles of City Hall
