Debary, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 2,691 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by residents of Key Largo and Biscayne Bay who came to create a dry season fishing ground on the east coast of Miami. The name Debary comes from Spanish meaning "protected bay." The first store opened in 1904 and the first post office was established in 1907. Debary was founded in 1892 by J.D. Donelson and W.F. White as a trading post on the Gulf of Mexico, about 25 miles southwest of Pensacola, Florida. The town became an important commercial center during the early 20th century and its population grew to over 10,000 by 1920. In 1927, Donelson sold Debary to his son-in-law, Dr. John Pritchard for $2 million. Pritchard developed the town into a major tourist destination with many hotels and restaurants; it also became known for its growing industry of citrus exports and its annual Fairs/Festivals (the "Pritchard Faire"). In the late 21st century, Debary's economy has been devastated by two hurricanes ( Irma in 2017 and Wilma in 2005) which caused extensive damage to both businesses and homes. However, despite these setbacks, Debary continues to enjoy significant tourist arrivals each year due to its unique attractions: including several amusement parks such as Universal Orlando Resort; a major NASCAR race track called Talladega Superspeedway; two shopping malls - one near Pensacola Airport called The Mall at debary mall; and several historical sites including the Donelson House Museum which timeline events from 1892-1927 surrounding the founding of Debarry The town is also home to numerous other small businesses that have sprung up in recent years such as GCI Diner which serves breakfast all day long; Burt's Bees cosmetics store which opened in 2018 adjacent to Walmart; Red Lobster restaurant where you can enjoy their lobster bisque soup or their seafood chowder served with fresh local mussels Debary is located about 25 miles west of Pensacola on US Highway 1A close to Interstate 95 Exit 159A
Debary was founded in 1892 by two men, A.J. Downing and J.H. Stephenson as a small community of just over a hundred people on the St Johns River in central Florida. The town quickly grew and soon became a major center for cotton agriculture and trade with nearby Jacksonville, Georgia. In the 1920s, Debary started to develop into a sizable city, with its own post Office and railroad station. By the 1940s, the population had reached over one thousand people and it continued to grow until the late 1990s when it peaked at nearly two thousand people.
