In 1941, during World War II, there were two major air raids against Debery: one on September 2nd and one on September 11th which destroyed over 20 homes and killed three people; both attacks occurred just south of town on US Highway 98 between Nowata and Debery Springs Roads (now US 95). The original Post Office building still stands today as part of the now defunct First National Bank located near Main Street east of the High School Campus
