In particular, it gained popularity among African American residents because it was easier and faster to get their hands on high-quality coffee than other forms of caffeine. Debary is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Debary were French fishermen and missionaries who landed there in 1668 on a small island in the bay which now forms the town's harbor. The original name of the island was "Island de la Roche" and it was given to the local leader by his American Indian enemies after they captured him during a punitive expedition against them in 1704. The town was founded as a trading post on what is now US-19 (now US-1) near present day Pensacola Beach on October 12, 1851 by J.D. Stevens and Elisha Swayne from Stonington, Connecticut with $2,000 worth of goods brought overland from Mobile Bay via Baton Rouge Landing on July 4, 1851; this trip marked completion of their two year exploration of northwest Florida before becoming settlers here permanently In 1865, Captain John Dyer became owner/manager of Pensacola Bay steamboat company and built one of its earliest vessels here - the "Eagle". It took Dyer three years to build her finally launching her September 10th 1867 at Pier 2 opposite current day New Port Town Hall with 350 passengers including 50 ladies & gentlemen accomplished by chartering several other boats for that voyage This event contributed significantly to raising money for General Sherman's army duringthe American Civil War through fundraising efforts ashore as well as aboard shipboard In 1870 Captains H.B Crosby (Captain), Wm Cornelius (Captain) Rufus Childs(Gov’t Agent), Fenton Ladd ( Mayor) made an investment in land owned by Averill Harriman which became known as “Debary Township” east side today’s Main Street layout being laid out along State Road 2A just north of where US-19 intersects that route

Debary, Florida is a small town in Pensacola County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Birmingham metropolitan area. In 1883, Congress authorized the construction of Fort Donelson on Mobile Bay to protect Spanish settlers from Seminole Indians. The fort became known as Fort Debary because its commanding officer was General James Pemberton Debary. The town began as a small community on the east side of Mobile Bay and grew rapidly due to shipbuilding and fishing businesses that developed around it. By 1890, the town had over 1,000 residents and built a wharf for shipping goods and passengers to Pensacola and other nearby ports. The town's growth continued into the 1920s when it annexed two other towns - Gulfport to the south and New Port Richey to the north - creating a municipality with a population of 10,500 people. During World War II, Debary played an important role in supplying munitions for both Allied and Axis forces fighting in Europe. Many of its citizens served in military units such as the US Coast Guard or Navy's Sixth Fleet Commanders' Squadron (VP-5) which operated out of Pensacola Harbor during those years. After World War II ended, many jobs left Debary as shipbuilders moved away from coastal Alabama into larger facilities in Mississippi and Louisiana; however, some local businesses still thrived until 1990 when Community First Bank went bankrupt after being bought by Citibank Corporation(). Today Debary is home to several small shops specializing in local crafts including quilts, pie crusts & pastries etc., leatherworking tools & supplies stores/stores that sells items related to horseback riding (including saddles), golf carts etc., four-year old kiddie clinics sponsored by Trine Day CARE Center services (KIDS FIRST! programs),and arts AND crafts shows throughout September/October each year hosted by various organizations within our community...
