Debary, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 914 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Debary was founded by Spanish explorers in 1559 as "New Spain". It became a Hudsons Bay Company post in 1786 and was named for General James Wilkinson, commander of the British forces during the American Revolution. The name may have been derived from the Miamian word "debar", meaning "to hinder or baffle". In 1821, it was established as a village on the Indian River by J. E. Bogan and others under the name of Fort George Town. A court house and jail were built here in 1824; it served at first as an agricultural center and later as a town. When Fort Niagara was destroyed in 1825, Debary became its primary port for supplying military forces with food and materials needed to rebuild Fort Niagara. In 1851, Jacksonville businessman William Ladd purchased land east of present-day Debary along US 1/SR 522 to establish what would become one of the most important cotton plantations in South Florida: Ladd's Gulf Station Plantation (later Broward plantation). This began what would be called Dixie Highway history – giant plantations such as this gradually grew into major citrus concerns throughout south Florida until they were displaced by development after World War II

Debary was founded in 1892 by J.W. Debary and his father, John W. Debary Sr. The town is located on a small peninsula on the St Johns River, about 25 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. The town became an important center for the citrus industry after it was discovered that the region had many acres of pine-based Juice Pineapple orchards which could be used to produce oranges and other citrus fruits. The first post office in Debary opened in 1893 and remained open until 1923. The first store in Debary was a general store operated by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Grooms with their son Harry opening the business in 1895. A second store followed in 1897 but failed due to low sales during the depression years of the 1920s.. In 1935, Mr: James Fenton purchased the old Grooms Store from Mrs: Grooms and reopened it as a grocery store under the name of Fenton's Fresh Market which continued operations until 1978 when it was replaced by Walmart Supercenters across from Interstate 95 near Jacksonville International Airport
