Military gift history in Debary, Florida can be traced back to the early 1800s when the first United States military outpost was established in the town. The town's namesake, General James Wilkinson, donated land for a military fortification known as Fort Donelson. The fort served as a training ground and garrison for American soldiers during the Seminole Wars and Mexican-American War. In 1875, Fort Donelson was renamed Fort Moultrie after Commodore John L. Moultrie, who helped lead U.S. forces against Native Americans during the Indian War of 1812. In 1940, Fort Moultrie was decommissioned and its contents were auctioned off to raise money for World War II mobilization efforts. From 1941-1945, Debary became home to Camp David which functioned as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's official White House residence During the Korean War (1950-1953), Camp David was used as an airfield providing fighter air cover for Operation characteristics of strategic bombers flew over South Korea To this day, it is one of only a few remaining U.S.-operated military installations outside of Washington D.C., and is open to visitors annually on Thursdays from 9am-4pm coinciding with National Military Museum events throughout the year As part of its celebration of military gift history in Florida this year, Debary Historical Society is hosting an event entitled "The History of Good Soldier Soldier". This event will include displays about local military museums in other states that feature such collections along with presentations from historians about specific gifts that have been made or received within those institutions This event will also serve as an opportunity for members of the community to meet Archivist at each museum and discuss any questions they may have about their holdings related to military history

The town was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 18th century. In 1810, Debary became part of Fort Brooke and later Fort Moultrie. In 1816, the United States annexed Florida and Debary became part of Jacksonville. The town was abandoned in the 1850s because of lack of resources.

Debary was founded by Captain John Fenton in 1822 as "Fenton's Town". It was renamed to its current name on November 7, 1912. The town site had been used by several previous settlements before it became the home of Debary. In 1838, Captains James Hickey and Nathaniel Hargrave moved their families from Ft Myers to Debary and took up land that now forms most of downtown core. Captains John Fenton and Daniel Boone also settled here in the early 1800s. The first school in town was built in 1837 on what is now Main Street east of Market Street. A second school was built on State Road 821 (now US Highway 441) north of courthouse square in 1839-40. In 1845, a third school was built on what is now Forest Road 2 near present day Civic Center Drive (SR 527). The first post office opened in Debary on September 10, 1850 with Wm Ladd as the first clerk and three other citizens serving as trustees; George Cranch Postmaster General at that time In 1861 when Jacksonville went through a secessionist movement and changed its name to Jacksonville Beach, Debary followed suit with Jacksonville Beach becoming an unincorporated community within Monroe County under Confederate rule until 1865 when it reverted back to Florida under Union rule It rejoined Monroe County after the war but continues today as an incorporated city with its own mayor/council/firefighters department

Debary is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,676 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 as part of a survey of land for the Jacksonville Railway Company. Debary is located at (27.560959, -83.111029). It is bordered to the north by Jacksonville and to the east by Allenton Beach. The community sits on reclaimed land between two other towns: Allenton Beach and Spring Hill. In 1881, Debary was founded as part of a survey of land for the Jacksonville Railway Company. The company built its first track through Debary in 1888 and soon became one of its most important clients. By 1907, Debary had become an off-road stop for motorists traveling along the railway line between Jacksonville and Gainesville. The growth of Debary was rapid during World War II; from 1942 until 1945 it served as headquarters for the United States Military forces stationed in Florida beachheads during World War II. In 1944, local businessmen formed the town's first school board and began fundraising to build a new schoolhouse which would serve as their town's primary educational institution until 1949 when Evergreen High School opened its doors.. In 1951, with passage of Publius I – called "the Town Redevelopment Act" – Debary received approval from then-Governor Lawton Chiles to become an incorporated municipality under Florida Statutes section 14-8-2(a). On November 3, 195988 years after he first conceived of making Debary an incorporated municipality – Governor Lawton Chiles dedicated that city charter amendment at his home on Main Street.. From that point forward residents throughout all four municipalities were legally bound together under “the Municipal Unit” name designating this locally elected body responsible for all common matters within each municipality organizational area including but not limited to services such as water systems, fire protection services etc., . . . As early as 1961 plans were underway to erect a Federal building on what are now known collectively as Town Square property adjacent to Evergreen High School serving both municipal units and county government functions such as law enforcement/ordinances enforcement etc…. That same year Mayor Al Golden presented plans packages before Commissioners asking them if they would support annexation into unincorporated St Johns County…. Thereafter discussion ensued among commissioners with Mayor Golden who stated that if there were no objections from municipal unit members then annexation should proceed….. Ultimately only St Johns County Commissioner Don Key objected against annexation stating that he did not believe that it would be beneficial for either side…. After much debate Commissioners voted 4-3 in favor of annexing into St Johns County….. This event marked endearing ties between both municipal units with many people referring to themselves today simply as “ Municipality Members” or even older citizens still using terms such as “We’ll just be Municipal Members again”…… Today although there are still some issues (mainly zoning) which need resolving regarding annexation several hundred citizens reside within our boundaries so we feel very connected politically within our own municipality… Although we have made strides over these past few decades we continue work towards improving infrastructure (suchas better roads) so residents can enjoy good quality life without fear or inconvenience
