Debary, Florida is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Griffin Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Debary" comes from Spanish meaning "place where there are birch trees." The first Europeans to visit Debary were Alonso de Cadiz and his group of survivors of the Indian massacre of Stonington on December 5, 1565. They named the settlement San Pedro de la Cruz after the Spanish patron saint, Pedro Santo Domingo (1493–1566). From 1668 to 1721 it was under English control as part of Fort William Henry and then as part of Pensacola. In 1784 it became a U.S. vice presidential territory under President George Washington's New England Grants Scheme; it remained an American possession until 1813 when Spain ceded it to America along with much of Pensacola Bay. In 1819 Rebekah Mason Brown married John Pugh in Debary; they would have three children: John Q., Rebekah J., and Anna C.; two more would follow after her death in 1865: Hugh Wrotey Pugh and Alice Loring Pugh (1883–1964). John Pugh was born in 1811 in Somerset County, England but immigrated to North America with his family when he was only six years old during the American Revolution; he eventually became one of America's most important entrepreneurs and philanthropists.
