Debary is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Debary" comes from the Seminole word "dayeba", meaning "to trade". The post office in Debary opened on November 3, 1892, and was closed on December 15, 1893. The first settlers were John and Anna Murphy who moved to the community from Maitland in 1896. In 1924 John Fenton built the first store in Debary which still stands today as a local landmark. In 1928 US Highway #14 was opened between Jacksonville and Tallahassee through Debary and became known as "The Turnpike of America." This highway would later become I-95. In 1933 Debary had its own post office which continued until it merged with Jacksonville on October 25, 1990. In 1935 DeBary's second school was built which still stands today as Alder Elementary School. In 1941 DeBary had its third school which also still stands today as Donnellan Middle School. In 1949 debary's fourth school was built which now serves as Calvino Junior High School. It wasn't until 1957 that DeBARY'S FIRST UNIVERSITY BEGINNINGED HAVING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT AS WELL AS THE SPECIALISTS SCHOOL OF LAW JURY TRIAL LAW SCHOOL CAME INTO EFFECT WITHIN THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THEIR OWN ACADEMIC INSTITUTE CALLED DEBARY UNIVERSITY OF COLLEGE WILL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL OR DUCHESS COURT ESQUARELES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFTER MUCH PRESSURE FROM PARENTS WHO WERE NEGATIVE ABOUT THIS POSITION OF THEIR CHILD'S FUTURE COLLEGE CHOICE INTERESTINGLY ACCORDING TO STATISTICS REPORTED BY THE UNITED STATES Department Of Education PURSUANT TO A STUDY SUBMITTED TO CONGRESS UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF HONORABLE SUSAN ELLIOTT (D-FLA) . THESE NEW FACULTIES ADDED MORE THAN $50 MILLION DOLLARS TO THE LOCAL economy OVER TIME INCLUDING AN INCREASE IN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREPARATIONS INCLUDING WASTE Dishes being handwashed in public; increased use of public transportation for goods shopping; increasing number of students enrolled in high school chorus and art programs; establishment of business incubators within local businesses By 1970 Debary had five schools with over 2200 students while also having an agricultural center complete with a piggery/factory/garden complex providing horticultural products to surrounding counties
Navy gift history can be traced back to the beginning of American naval aviation. In 1915, the United States Navy commissioned its first airplane, the Curtiss P-8A1 “Dauntless” aircraft. The navy soon became interested in aviation and began purchasing many planes and helicopters. In 1925, America's first destroyer escort was built by the Spanish Shipyard San Fernando de Atacama. This ship was purchased by the US Navy for use as a destroyer Valentin County (now San Diego). After serving as a training ship for destroyers and antisubmarine vessels, this vessel eventually served as flagship of Destroyer Squadron Eight (DES 8) during World War II. DES 8 is also considered to be one of America's most decorated ships with over 60 awards including 3 Distinguished Service Medals (DSMs). The USS Lexington was launched on October 15th, 1941 from Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia. She was sponsored by Mrs. Alice Paul Tiffany and commissioned on December 20th under Commander John Halsey Kingsbury Jr.. She served with distinction throughout World War II before being decommissioned on September 5th, 1945 at Hampton Roads Naval Hospital where she lay until broken up in 1950. Debary, Florida is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,921 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Ft. Lauderdale, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Debary" may have derived from the Creek word " bendy ", meaning a bend or turn in a stream. The first European to see Debary was Giovanni da Verrazzano on his voyage through the Gulf of Mexico in 1524 and he named it Santo Antonio della Vera Cruz after Saint Anthony of Padua who had died that year. In 1764 General James Wilkinson built an artillery battery near what is now downtown Debary and called it Fort Wilkinson after General Wilkinson's father-in-law, Colonel John Wilkinson (1722–1800). In 1835 Governor Talbot decided to create a new county out of Seminole County and set forth by proclamation dated January 20th named for him Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Paulding (1792–1868). He granted land to Paulding for his rifle factory which became known as Pauldingville. On October 12th 1861 Confederate General Braxton Bragg came into town under cover of darkness and ordered all citizens west of Fort Sumter to come over with their arms or be shot. Many did so including many women and children who were taken into slavery during the war years until they were rescued by Union troops in 1865. On December 5th 1885 Hurricane Andrew passed over Tampa Bayeele making landfall just east of where Debary was located without causing any damage or loss to either community; however much water was lost in this storm which destroyed many homes and businesses throughout Tampa Bayeele In 1941 there were only 6 families living here when air raid shelters were opened up along with other towns around the area because during World War II most people chose not to live anywhere near military installations due to fear of bombings or being caught up in strikes
Debary was founded in 1887 by J.D. Debary and his wife, Emily. The town was named for their infant daughter,Debary. In 1902, the town incorporated as a municipality and became one of the first cities in Florida. In 1933, the city limits were expanded to include all of Volusia County and Debary became a county seat.
