A branch of the Miami Herald Newspaper was started here in 1898 and until 1916 it was published from an old schoolhouse on Third Street which is now used as a gymnasium for Deerfield Park High School. In 1915, deerfield beach became an incorporated municipality with its own Board of Commissioners under Mayor Nevin Hirschfeld and Driscoll Road became its original downtown street name after pioneer citrus fruit grower Jocko Donahue donated land for the development including his home, built on what is now Fourth Street North (the current site of Town Hall). Deerfield Park Golf Course opened in 1909 and soon became one of the most popular public courses in America due to its beautiful layouts, challenging golfing challenges as well as great views from every hole regardless of distance played
