Deerfield Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area. Deerfield Beach was named after an English family that settled there around 1868. The name means " deer-station." The first settlers were two brothers who came to Florida in 1837 and named their new land Deerfield after the deer they saw grazing on their property in England. In 1870, a group of thirteen Dutch farmers arrived and began farming here as well. They built a small log cabin and called it Deers Crossing because they had seen deer running across the intervening fields near their farmstead on Doaks Mill Road. The town grew rapidly from its initial population of just twenty families to over one hundred by 1880 when Interstate 95 was completed connecting Miami with Fort Lauderdale and southern Lakeland. By 1900, Deerfield Beach boasted a population of three thousand people and seventy businesses including twelve banks, four churches, five schools, two theaters, three hotels and eighteen breweries along with over fifty homes. During World War II many residents left for military service but most returned home during the war’s end; however some did stay behind to help build postwar highways such as I-95 south from Fort Lauderdale into South Florida and US 1 north from Palm Beach into North Florida
