Deerfield Beach is a city located in Palm Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Deerfield Beach was Fenton Wofford, who arrived on July 1, 1881. He and his family built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1888, Wofford's son John opened Woffords Mercantile Establishment at 201 E 2nd Street which became a popular shopping destination for residents of nearby West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. In 1912, Jens Hansen began operating the Hudsons Store at 6th Avenue and Third Street which became known as "the center of town." In 1925, Deerfield Beach incorporated as a city under the name of "Ft Lauderdale". On November 3rd of that year it changed its name to "Deerfield Beach" after President James K. Polk delivered an address in honor of its incorporation into the city limits by then Mayor Auld and City Clerk Tilton Ritchie. The original mayor was Hines McFarlane with power to veto any ordinance passed by city council without his signature; however this power has been abolished since then among other mayoral powers granted to councils by state law.
