He and his family established a small farm about three miles (4 km) north of today's town center on what is now State Road 7 West. After only a few years, Dickinson sold his land to Captain Arthur Smith of Jacksonville for $2 per acre (). When the railroad arrived in 1855, the town's growth accelerated due to its location near both railway lines and easy access to markets. In 1870 two brothers named Cranch and Hennessey purchased 85 acres (30 ha) of land east of present day Main Street from John Dickinson for $1 per acre (). This property became known as Dutch Fort (), after which it wasYNamed Deerfield Beach because deer were common pastures there at that time (). In 1876 an act was passed by Congress recognizing Deerfield Beach as a county seat with powers over government buildings and roads therein. The county commissioners met at Dutch Fort on May 15th to select one of five finalists - Ft Lauderdale – but after 4 hours deliberation they chose Deerfield Beach unanimously over Ft Lauderdale! The new county courthouse was completed in 1888 and served as the seat until 1918 when Broward County moved into newly constructed county hall on Norton Avenue across fromMRadio Park(). The town changed its name again in 1922 when it amalgamated with neighbouring Pompano Beach to formbroward-miami metropolitan area. According to the 2000 US Census, there are 11,309 people living in Deerfield Beach proper while 1,812 residents live within walking distance of downtown or main square (the eastern edge of which is also home toPompano Mall). Deerfield Beach, Florida was originally settled by the Seminoles in the 1800s. The name Deerfield may come from the Okeechobee River which flows through the town. In 1841, a post office was established in Deerfield Beach and it remained in operation until 1915. The first settlers were Indian men who came to Deerfield from Alabama. They built cabins on what is now Bank Street and collected deer meat for their own use. By 1868, deer had become so scarce that most of the settlers decided to sell their land and move away. However, a group of men from Georgia returned to Deerfield Beach after hearing about it from friends and decided to stay. They started a grocery store and began trading with other settlements in South Florida. Over time, deer became an important part of life in Deerfield Beach and people hunted them for sport or food.
