Deerfield Beach, Florida is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida. It is located on the Indian River Lagoon. The population was 6,581 at the 2010 census. Deerfield Beach is part of the Hollywood Hills neighborhood. The first Europeans to visit Deerfield Beach were Portuguese sailors on their way to India in 1564-65. Captain John Smith sailed up the coast of what is now Deerfield Beach in 1607 and named it after his ship "Deerfield". The first white settlers arrived in 1845 and founded a post office called "Easton" near present day University Drive and Park Boulevard. In 1892, developers built a resort town called "Beach Haven", which became known as Deerfield Beach due to its high number of vacation homes rented out for summer vacations during that time period. In 1954, when Palm Beaches were created from portions of Broward County, Deerfield Beach became part of Palm Beaches proper (though still considered an unincorporated community). The name “DeerFIELD” was given by early settler Jens Nielsen because he thought it would be easier for children to pronounce than “BETHEL” or “HOLMES” since those names sounded too close together for them to remember easily. Nielsen also liked the sound of the word because there had been no deer living along this coast before him and he thought it would be a fun place to hunt deer with friends after dinner! As development grew around South Blvd., east side Rd., west side Rd., people started calling this area home: HAVEN (beach), BETHEL (ocean), BOYNTON (mountain), etc... until finally DEERFIELD BEACH came about in 1954 when palmbeach subdivisions were formed within county limits

By the late 1970s, however, Deerfield Beach's economy had begun to decline due to rising costs associated with changes in local demographics and environmental factors.
