Deerfield Beach, Florida is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 55,836 at the 2010 census. The city is named after George Deerfield, an early settler. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Deerfield Beach were Frenchmen who named it "Beau Rivage" which means "Beautiful River." In 1838, Deerslayer Jameson founded a small trading post on the beach and called it Fort Deerfield. American settlers arrived during the Seminole Wars and names for their settlements changed often but Fort Deerfield became known as "Deerfield". After the end of World War II many people left for various reasons such as joblessness or politics in Cuba; however, there were still a few families that lived here until the late 1960s when development began along South Ocean Boulevard (now US 1). The first African American to live in Deerfield Beach was Keye Crayton who moved into a small house on Third Street in 1922. He was succeeded by his son Keye Gentry Crayton II who opened his own store on Fourth Street in 1945. However, most of Black America did not move into this town until after integration started happening throughout southern Floridians during the mid-20th century and white flight began from much of south Florida beginning around 1940s due toair quality concerns brought about by World War II bombings over Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. In 1965 Breezey Island Shopping Center opened next door to then- existing Big Lots grocery store with anchor tenant Belk department store remaining until 1996 when it closed its doors and all its inventory moved into nearby Mervyn's King Soopers location across First Avenue from Belk at that time becoming one of only two open Sears stores west of Chicago (the other being Kmart). Deerfield Beach is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern shore of Biscayne Bay. Deerfield Beach was founded by English colonists in 1868 as part of a land grant to Dr. George Cushing and his wife Caroline Cushing. The town was named for Dr. George de la Fayette Browder, an American Founding Father and military general who served in India and Pakistan during the British Raj. The first store in Deerfield Beach opened in 1870 on Fourth Street between Indian River Boulevard and Biscayne Boulevard. The first post office opened in 1872 on Third Street between Indian River Boulevard and Biscayne Boulevard. The current courthouse building was built in 1906–07 and is located on Second Street near First Avenue south of State Road 8 ( nowadays US-1). It replaced an earlier courthouse that burned down in 1904. It originally housed the Circuit Court which handled small cases until 1898 when it moved to the new courthouse which remained until its demolition in 2004 to make way for a shopping mall development called "The Commons". In 1970, deerfield beach became one of only two towns along with West Palm Beach to be designated a community effects zone due to its impact upon businesses within the town limits
