The Delray Beach Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's Ninth Wing. The wing is responsible for the air defense of Southern Florida and adjacent inland areas. The 9th Wing was established at Delray Beach on 1 October 1949, as a unit of the Air Defense Command. It was one of two original wings at the base, and it was reactivated on 17 September 1957 as part of Continental United States Air Forces in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The wing flew its first mission on 7 October 1959. Since its establishment, the wing has been involved in many activities including support to Operation Neptune's Spear during the Vietnam War; Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during Operation Gulf Stream; and numerous missions associated with homeland defense such as Joint Flying Training exercises, Red Flag exercises, Global Warning operations, and various other training events. Today's Ninth Wing consists of more than 6,000 members who provide vital air defense services to residents in Pinellas County and adjacent counties. These include fighter aircraft stationed at Delray Beach AFB, Andersen AFB (near Tampa), Hurlbut Field (near Jacksonville), Fort Myers AB (in Stuart), Ellington Field (in Orlando), Clearwater AFB (in Clearwater) and Sanford-Ft Myers AB (in Sanford). In addition to providing aerial refueling service for USAF bombers flying over Central Florida, Delray Beach AFB also provides storage for over 400 KC-135 Stratotankers used by both ground forces and Navy aviation during peacetime rotations around Southeast Florida. Additionally, Andrews AFB houses two Bombardier Canada C-Series jets assigned towing strategic reconnaissance assets fromDelray Beach Airport while Naval Station Key West mans an additional KC-130J Globemaster III aerial tanker squadron providing replenishment flights along with Search And Rescue capabilities when needed.. Despite their many successes, however, the USAF faces increasing challenges today that must be addressed if the force is going to remain a relevant player on global battlefields for years to come. One such challenge is budgetary constraints; while spending has increased over time, there has not been enough increase in available resources able to meet militants’ latest threats and aspirations. Additionally, changes within US military doctrine – specifically with respect to aircraft procurement – are causing some members of Congress and Pentagon leaders concern about future readiness levels within the service.

Delray Beach is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded in 1902 by the Delray Beach Company of New York City as an exporter of citrus fruit. The town has grown to include a population of over 100,000 people and is known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and rich history. The name Delray Beach was given to the town by Commodore James C. Delray who sailed his ship "Delray" into the bay in 1892. The town's first store opened in 1898 on Commercial Drive. By 1907, the town had acquired its present name which it held until 1959 when it changed back to Delray Beach Company after being bought by a group of businessmen led by Drs. Philip J. Hirschhorn and Irving Bilsky. In 1961, the company merged with two other companies to form Coral Gables-based Doral Companies Incorporated (now worth $4 billion). In 1972, Doral Companies merged with Textron Industries Incorporated (now worth $18 billion) creating one of America's largest chemical conglomerates. The city of DelRAY BEACH became part of this conglomerate and continued to grow at a fast pace until 2001 when it decided to secede from Coral Gables and become its own municipality under the name of "DelRAY BEACH CITY".
