The townsite was founded in 1928 by brothers Harry and Raynor Delray as "DelRay Beaches." In 1963, it became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government. On December 12, 2006, it merged with adjoining communities of Boca Raton to create the city of Miami Beach. Delray Beach is located on the Atlantic coast about 15 miles east of Downtown Miami. The town's location gives it good access to both water and air resources that are essential for local businesses and residents alike. In the early 1800s, coffee was being grown in small villages in Africa. Coffee beans were ground into a thick paste and used to make a type of drink known as kopi laut ( literally "coffee with water"). This drink was enjoyed by both rich and poor people, but it was not until after the Dutch took control of Java in 1626 that coffee became an official export from Indonesia. However, the taste of Indonesian coffee wasn't everyone's favorite. Some European traders found the taste too strong and decided to stop importing it altogether. In order to keep trade open, Indonesia ceded control over its coffee resources to Spain in 1813. Spanish traders began importing more Ethiopian beans which gave rise to Ethiopian Coffee Company Ltd., now part of Starbucks Corporation. The first espresso machine was invented by Angelo Petrini in 1795 and became popularized by Giovanni Battista Jannone in 1824-25. instant espresso machines were also invented during this time period for use at cafes or restaurants. During World War II, supplies of high quality Turkish coffee were diverted for military purposes so espresso machines weren't manufactured anymore until postwar years when they resumed production under license from Italian roasters such as Lavazza and Pernod Ricard

That year saw one of America's biggest naval engagements when Commodore James Dewey led his fleet against Spanish forces off Key Biscayne beach in what is now known as the Battle of Coral Gables. Today,DelRAY BEACH celebrates its rich maritime history through commemoration events such as the annual Key Biscayne Naval Museum Cruise and International Seafood Festival which attracts some 1 million visitors each year!
Delray Beach is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm Beach–Dania–Boca Raton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Delray Beach were Captains John Clements and James Cook in 1768 while exploring Florida's Central Coast. They charted the coast as far north as St Augustine and named it "Eustaquia" after their patron saint, Eustachius of Carthage. In 1814, during the Seminole Wars, General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida and destroyed most of Fort Gaines on Jacksonville's southern shoreline. The fort had been built by Major James Wilkinson to protect American shipping interests off the east coast of Florida against Spanish forces descending from Mexico City. After General Jackson's victory over Spain at New Orleans in 1815, Wilkinson became a hero and was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for his work on Fort Gaines. In 1821 he moved his headquarters from Jacksonville to what is now Delray Beach due to its strategic location near Tampa Bay and its potential for Naval operations against Spanish vessels in that area. In 1826 Captain John Jervis explored South Keys Key West (now Boca Raton) through which he discovered land that would become DelRay Beach when he mapped it on July 25th, 1826 while sailing along with Commodore James Kappeeny on HMS Beagle under Rear Admiral Sir George Parker's command during their circumnavigation of North America voyages.. Captain Jervis called this new coastline "Beach Head". From Cape Canaveral (the point where Space Shuttle Atlantis launched) until Apalachicola Bay there was only open water between Thursday Island (near lighthouse present day Jupiter Inlet) and South keys key west; no land could be seen or found beyond Thursday Island barring limited Hunting & Fishing opportunities available offshore from adjacent reefs/Islands etc...thus making any landfall attempt difficult or impossible without some sort of craft or air support being available...beach head became known as "DelRay" or simply "Beach" due to these limitations
