Delray Beach, Florida is a retirement town located on the Atlantic Ocean. The town was founded in 1902 by J.P. Morgan and his partners, Arthur Biddle and George Peabody. Delray Beach became an incorporated municipality in 1959. The population of Delray Beach was 9,811 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Delray Beach were two families from Massachusetts who came overland during the Gold Rush in 1849. They named their new settlement after a small island in the Bahamas, which they had seen while sailing on their way to California. The Morgan-Peabody group built a wharf and began trading with local Native Americans for goods such as meat and fish. They also set up a school system for their children and developed a few businesses including insurance and real estate practices until 1903 when they sold their holdings to Averill Harriman for $150,000 dollars ($ today). In 1909, Harry Bridges opened world's second successful container port on Islip Headland just south of Delray Beach with improvements that include dredging the harbor so that it could handle larger vessels safely; he also built beachfront homes along North Point Boulevard (now Promenade) to accommodate shipping passengers and cargo arriving through his portage between Islip Headland and Big Muddy Bayou (present day Daisy Key), creating one of America's earliest waterfront communities. In 1922, following passage of the Panama Canal Act by Ulysses S Grant, many people heard about this potential shortcut to global trade Routes 2 or 3 would offer instead of driving through Central America each way! With its huge development potential available for shipment directly from southern California via Panama City or Colon Island only minutes' sail away via Yacht Haven Harbor - this must have been exciting news for businessmen like Harry Bridges! By 1926 Bridge's Company controlled almost all transportation links within Fort Pierce County; demand from shipping terminals ashore led him to build another container port on Jupiter Inlet east of downtown Fort Pierce - naming it Port Everglades after his company ship ever since! Bridge died suddenly in March 1927 before he could see how much progress Interstate 95 had made since he had last visited Fort Pierce County 25 years earlier: "The good old days when we drove across country ..." Many believe that without Mr. Bridge there would be no modern day beaches like Daytona or Clearwater! After his death both Ports Everglades closed because competition from out-of-state ports took over... but reopened several years later as part of an overall plan called 'Port Everglades II'. Averill Harriman wanted more than just an efficient seaport - he wanted something unique which would make him stand out from other businesspeople in Fort Pierce County: He realized thatbesides having world class infrastructure he needed something beautiful too... so he commissioned architect Paul Rudolph to design what is now known as "Harriman Seaside Drive"... one can only imagine all those lovely white sand beaches down at Doheny Bayou waiting to be explored! Together with partner Harkins & Sons Construction Co., Averill Harriman created one ofFort Pierce County’s most iconic symbols – harpies walking alongshorelines – beginning with construction work on Watergate Pier (1929), followed by HarbourWalk (1931), Dolphin Point (1932), Sunrise Heights (1935), Diamond Shoals(1936) – these public works will always remind us why our little community stoodouts against all odds during those early days!"
