When it was first established in 1947, the United States Air Force had only twelve squadrons. Today, with a total of 58 wings and bases across the country, the USAF employs over 300,000 military and civilian personnel, making it one of America's most complex militaries. The USAF also provides vital aerial services to both national security and peacetime purposes; its strategic bombers can carry out nuclear strikes against targets in Russia or North Korea. The history of gift giving within the USAF is accordingly intertwined with that of air force spending itself. From modest gifts given as thank-you's for service to more extravagant offerings made in support of global operations, much has been contributed to ensure that members of the armed forces have access to all manner of mementos and relics from around the world. Herein lies one key reason why air force gift history is so fascinating: it reflects not just how our Armed Forces have interacted with those around them but also how they themselves have interacted with each other. This paper will focus on two aspects: (1) RAF Commanders' Messes (1947-present) and (2) The Air Force Museum 'Airlines Of War' exhibit (2002-present). Each are indicative of a different strand in USAF gift history - those dedicated to Forgiveness And Rememberance, which focuses onhumankind's role in war while forgetting those who fought and died; and those seeking To Build A Better Future, which celebratesairpower as an essential componentof American strategy today. It should be noted that this paper is not exhaustive - there are many more examples could be explored if time were available. In short however, these two examples provide a good overview of what has been mentioned here - witness how RAF Commander messes have gradually evolved since their inception into something specialised within theAAF culture!

The Deltona Air Force Base gift history can go back to the early days of the base when it was established in 1940. The air force has always been a major part of the community and has donated many items, including military equipment, to help with local needs. Some of the most well-known gifts from the air force have come in the form of aircrafts and missiles. In 1984, an F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet was gifted to Deltona AFB in honor of then- USAF Chief General Curtis LeMay. In 1999, a United States Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker was given to the city as part of a celebration for 10 years since its introduction at Deltona AFB. In recent years, there have also been donations in support of education and recreational opportunities for locals. Deltona is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 7,918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Deltona was made by early Seminole settlers in 1836. The area that would become Deltona was originally named Punta Gorda after a point on the island of Vieques where Spanish traders placed their whaling vessels. In 1839, a group of Englishmen who were exploring the Gulf Coast arrived at Fort Sumter and discovered an uninhabited island off the coast of Jacksonville called Stonington Island. They named it after their captain, Nicholas Stonington, who had led them there. In 1841, Alexander Hume purchased land east of present-day Deltona from James Dunlap and began to build a house on what is now Beach Road. This became known as Hume House or simply Hume Farmstead. Hume died in 1850 and his wife took over land ownership and development. By 1861, all but one block of beachfront property had been developed and renamed Ocean Boulevard for General James Harnett during his military service as governor of Florida during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. A post office called "Hume" was established in 1868, but no mail ever reached it because sea currents prevented ships from sailing to its location within range of shorelineside mailboxes ashore on Boca Chica Island (later Boca Raton). A new post office called "Denton" was established adjacent to Hume House in 1870; however, no mail ever reached it because again sea currents interfered with ship arrival at Boca Chica Island ashore on Dune Drive/Ocean Boulevard (later State Road 575). In 1903 Draycott Wyle moved back to England with his family when he became headmaster at Liverpool's Haberdashery School No 1 which then shared space with Equestrian Club Liverpool which also happened to be managed by his father-in-law John Lennon Sr.. When Mr Wyle retired from school board duties due to age he sold all interests including Equestrian Club Liverpool & Haberdashery School No1 together for £2 million to Alfred Beeson Jr.. However due to Health Act 1906 laws affecting inheritance tax Beeson could only sell haberdashery school shares so not all money went towards purchase price + interest payments (estimated value 2007: £27 million) . After World War I health problems forced Mrs Wyle into semi retirement; she passed away in 1925 aged 86 years old & Son Rev'd Cyril inherited her home & business assets including Equestrian Club Liverpool which continued run until 1986 when it closed down due mainlyto lack of customers . On 9th October 2006 building society Thorpe bought house next door from Mrs Wyle for £10 million having been offered it by son Rev'd Cyril upon her death 26 years earlier
