In 1868, Captain John Denny established a small lighthouse here and named it Denny's Lighthouse after him. In 1902, citrus growers from Key West began growing oranges here and organized into companies that marketed their fruit throughout South America and Europe; these companies are still active today. The industry boomed during World War II because of military production needs for airplanes, tanks and other equipment development in southern Florida. However, by 1945 citrus production had declined due to chemical warfare attacks against Japan; this decline continued until 2002 when new technology made sugarcane farming more efficient and prices dropped so that orange production became profitable again. Today Deltona continues to be an important commercial center with retail businesses such as Macy's Department Store (now Macy's) along with restaurants including Olive Garden Italian Restaurant - one of two locations open 24/7 inside Fort Walton Beach State Park - as well as banks including First Federal Savings Bank & Trust Company which has been located here since 1907 and also includes an ice cream shop called scoop 'n' scoop; all across from state park Headquarters Complex which houses visitor services like a library and movie theater within walking distance for those who wish to spend time outdoors or visit nearby shopping malls like SunTrust Center UTC mall or OneSouth mall before continuing on to Interstate 95 just south of town limits - making it easily accessible by car or bus from most parts of Miami-Dade County! Deltona is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by African Americans who arrived from Georgia and other parts of the south in 1884. They built homes on what is now government land that still stands today. In 1912, Deltona was incorporated as a village and became a city on November 3, 1924. On December 1, 1959, it re-incorporated as a town after becoming unorganized due to lack of population growth in Seminole County during that time period. The name "Deltona" comes from the Choctaw word "delia," meaning 'place of plenty.' The first black schoolteacher in Florida was Miss Edna Crouch who taught in Deltona's first public school between September 1914 and February 1915. She started this school with just five students but soon enough she had twenty four students using her classroom which sat on the current Main Street lot today! Throughout these years there were many black women teachers throughout Seminole County working to keep our schools open for all children no matter their color or background! William Greening who served as Mayor of Deltona for many years said “It would not have been possible for us to succeed without them (the black women)” Today we still remember their memory with some great black businesses such as Coca Cola Refreshments & Restaurant and Jimmy John’s Pizza where they continue to serve up delicious food every day!
