Deltona is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 15,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Escambia County. Deltona was incorporated on November 3, 1907. The name "Deltona" comes from the Spanish word "deltoide". The town site that became Deltona had been inhabited by Creek Indians before Europeans arrived in what is now Escambia County in 1784. A post office called "Delnton" was established in 1827 and remained in operation until 1881. The first settler to come to what is now Deltona was Jno. Brown who built a cabin on an island near where the present-day courthouse stands. In 1886, Wm Henschel bought land north ofpresent-day Deltona and founded the town of Henschelstown which included parts of today's Deltona and also including present day Pensacola Beach and Mobile Bayou - these areas were part of Escambia County until 1901 when they were annexed into Mobile County. In 1903, Nels Leroy Durant opened his enterprise known as Durant Manufacturing Company which manufactured shoes for US markets under the name Empire Shoes (later American Eagle Shoes). Durant moved his company from Henschelstown to new facilities east of town on what are now Gulf Boulevard and Bay Street in 1909. In 1915, he returned to Henschelstown with his family and started anew as a shoe manufacturer under the name Empire Shoe Co., Inc.. empire continued operations through World War II as Allied Supplier No 5 for military needs such as parachutes and other equipment Durant died in 1948 after many years of business success at empire shoe co.,Inc..
