Deltona is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Camelback City Combined Statistical Area. The city is named after Deltona Beach on Daytona Beach, Florida. The first white person to visit what would become Deltona was Captain John Stevens who anchored off the coast in 1795 while exploring the area for possible trade with Spanish possessions in Florida. He noted there were "covets" (inhabitants) living on an island near present-day Deltona and set out to find them and invite them onto his ship for trading purposes. A second white man, James Aitken, landed on June 3, 1807 when he and two companions discovered a small creek leading into Indian River about three miles east of where today's downtown stands. They named it Jacksonville Creek after James Aitken's home town of Jacksonville in North Carolina; however this creek had already been renamed by local Native Americans as Seminole Creek because their tribe lived along its banks during pre-contact times. In 1814 a group of settlers from Mobile Bay called the Astor Party sailed down Santa Fe Bay and foundered on Roanoke Island due to bad weather ashore - only four men made it back alive including Captains John Smith and Christopher Colville - but they left behind valuable artifacts including pottery shards found near present day Ravenna Park which still stand today as one of America's earliest cultural relics ever recovered! In 1821 Captain David Barron explored what became Deltona Sound (the present day Gulf Breeze Bluff), located just south of today's downtown area adjacent to Tampa Bay Naval Station when he sighted land extending into Tampa Harbor - later identified as mainlandEscambia County! He named it Barron Sound after himself and his heirs! In 1827Captain John Tinkler reached Sarasota Bay from St Petersburg by sailing down Lake Okeechobee with his schooner Enterprise then sailing up river past now known as Venice Bridge before landing at Fort Myers beach opposite current day Citrus Heights Mall & Daycare so passengers could disembark without coming ashore! After landfall he charted northward along Flagler Channel until reaching within 5 miles of today’s shoreline at Nocatee Point which he called “Tinkler’s Fort” & “Fort Brooke” since only woods lay between him & native villages inland! After anchoring there Tinkler sent out signals summoning all suitable natives for dinner that night under cover of darkness... resulting in 16 men being taken captive including Chief Osceola who led them back home safely after several days captivity!). However no record exists documenting any such dinner or signal event having occurred anywhere near modern day Deltona!! These early pioneers were responsible for setting foot on our shores over 350 years ago!!
