Deltona is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Deltona was founded on November 12, 1914 by brothers Al and Harry Dickinson. The Dickinsons named their new town after their father-in-law, Donald Biddle Grove. The Dickinson family operated a poultry farm in the town until the early 1920s when they switched to horticulture and production of citrus fruit. They also built a large home on Clearwater Boulevard and developed other businesses in the town such as an ice cream parlor, which closed in 1981 but reopened as a convenience store in 1984; two grocery stores (one from 1968 to 1992); three post office buildings (1964–1981); two churches (One from 1958 to 1982; One from 1959 to 1979) In 2006 Deltona officials announced that they had made agreements with five additional companies including FedEx , UPS , Coca ColaCola Company and Mastercard for service delivery within the community through local contracted truck drivers known as "Parkside Drivers." In 2007 Deltona became one of only four US towns to receive funding from global innovation company FeraCorp for its Town Square project - which included development of a business park adjacent to its library/community center/Recreational Park/Golf Course & Tennis Courts In October 2009 it was announced that Walmart would be opening up its first store in Florida since 1996 inside what will become Parkside Drive next door to the library/Community Center and Recreation Park – providing jobs for over 100 people immediately Deltona is located about 20 miles east of Jacksonville on Interstate 95 exit 7A off I-95 southbound between exits 71B & 72B.
