This paper will explore some of the more notable deployments in this city and how they have shaped Destin’s culture and economy. In 1899, after years of effort by Mayor John Mapes and City Councilman Wm. Henson, the United States Army was established in Destin as part of an enlarged Florida Regiment. The regiment was composed of militiamen from Polk County and included a detachment from Fort Walton Beach. The army garrisoned two companies at Fort Brooke until 1907 when it amalgamated with the Regular Infantry Battalion at Jacksonville to form the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). In 1912, Major General John Jellicoe ordered all infantry divisions on active duty to be organized into brigades under his command while also ordering armored units that were then being developed into divisions (the Armored Force had only begun operations).
