The United States Army Garrison of Destin, Florida was established in 1898. The present garrison is the second incarnation of the post. It was first established as a military installation at Fort Brooke on St. Johns River, and then moved to its present site in 1918. The original garrison consisted of barracks, a hospital, and an arsenal. In World War I, it housed 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment In 1945 the garrison became the home of 3rd Armored Division when that division was moved from Tampa to Ft. Brooke.
